Nursery at Sherwell Valley Primary School

Indoor play and outdoor exploration share the day at Sherwell Valley, where a teacher-led nursery accepts children from age two. It belongs to Sherwell Valley Primary School on Hawkins Avenue in Torquay. This is an introduction to learning within a school setting, with the nursery's curriculum centred on relationships, communication and growing independence.
The physical setting gives that approach room to work. An EYFS building provides classroom and outdoor space for pre-school and Reception children, bringing both kinds of learning into the same early years environment.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines care with learning. Here, its starting points are children's emotional and social development, language and physical skills. In everyday terms, that means practising turn-taking, talking with adults and other children, and developing the coordination needed for running, drawing and handling scissors. These are useful foundations for joining in and doing more independently.
Activities combine adult guidance with children's own choices, indoors and outside. Books and stories sit alongside singing, painting and model-making. Children explore living things and investigate how things work, while practical counting introduces number. Mathematics appears daily through conversation, songs, objects children can handle and ordinary routines, giving numbers a purpose beyond a separate lesson.
Ofsted's inspection on 20 and 21 February 2024 described early years activities that connected children's interests with specific skills. Dough-shaping exercised small finger movements; scientist role play gave children a chance to use vocabulary about minibeasts. Displays of children's work helped connect new learning with earlier experiences. Books were introduced from the start of early years, with expressive adult storytelling encouraging engagement.
The same inspection identified uneven curriculum development and implementation in some wider subjects, leaving gaps in pupils' knowledge. That concern applied across the school, rather than being presented as a nursery-specific finding.
Relationships are part of the EYFS approach, including partnership between families and practitioners. The curriculum recognises that children develop differently and includes children with special educational needs and disabilities, so individual needs belong within the learning plan.
At school level, SEND support involves families, external agencies and specialist local provision. This gives parents a route into discussions about additional help alongside the nursery team. For drinks, the school's Cool Milk information offers free milk to under-fives, with registration through Cool Milk.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet its deadline. For the September 2026 intake, the school directed applications through Torbay Council.
Shared classroom and outdoor provision can offer continuity of surroundings between nursery and Reception. That physical connection is separate from the allocation of school places.
To express interest in a nursery place, complete the nursery's Expression of Interest Form; the school then contacts families. This is the nursery enquiry route, distinct from the council application for Reception.
Schoolgateway handles nursery fee payments and lets families track payments and transactions. For general enquiries, the school office can be reached at admin@svps1.com or on 01803 613296.
