Nursery at Orleans Primary School

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

Science sheds, light panels and patterns made with hoops give Orleans’ early years provision a practical, exploratory character. The nursery takes children aged three and four and belongs to the school’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). It can accommodate up to 26 children in each session, with morning, afternoon and full-day options giving families different ways to organise attendance.

At the June 2024 Ofsted inspection, early years provision was graded Outstanding. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery. The nursery sits within Orleans Primary School on Hartington Road in Twickenham, with school grounds and playground space extending across the age groups.

The Nursery Day

Adult-guided activities alternate with children’s own choices. The nursery timetable for the 2024–2025 academic year placed a short whole-class activity between longer periods of exploration in each session. This gives the day a recognisable rhythm: time to pursue an interest, come together as a group and return to learning through activity.

EYFS learning connects early language and relationships with physical development, creativity, literacy, mathematics and understanding the world. Assessment involves watching children during ordinary activities and spending time on specific tasks with individuals or small groups. Learning is therefore considered through what children do, rather than just a finished piece of work.

The June 2024 early years findings describe children investigating with magnifying glasses, science sheds and light panels. Number work included making mixtures and devising patterns to follow through hoops and obstacles. These examples make abstract ideas tangible. Nursery children played collaboratively, stayed absorbed in activities and moved smoothly between them, giving a picture of sustained exploration alongside learning to share.

Care and Support

Social learning has a clear place in the nursery day. In June 2024, children in early years showed consideration for others and developed awareness of their feelings; adults helped build these emotional and social skills. For a young child, learning alongside others includes recognising feelings as well as taking part in activities.

Children on the school’s special educational needs register have a Learning Support Plan each term, setting out targets, strategies and interventions. The SENCO reviews the register, and further professional advice can involve speech and language therapy, educational psychology, occupational therapy or physiotherapy. This provides a defined structure for discussing a child’s support needs.

Teaching adjustments. The June 2024 inspection identified inconsistent adaptation for pupils with SEND and weaknesses in checking understanding across the school. These were school-wide concerns, rather than nursery-specific findings. Families considering additional support should discuss how their child’s learning will be adapted and reviewed.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application, and places are allocated against Richmond’s admission criteria. Nursery attendance is not among the listed priorities, so familiarity with the school should not be treated as an admissions advantage.

For the 2026–2027 Reception intake, the application deadline was 15 January 2026. The route was through Richmond’s admissions website to eAdmissions. That deadline has passed; it belongs to that intake rather than a future application cycle.

Practical Information

Morning nursery runs from 9am to noon; the afternoon session starts at 12.30pm and finishes at 3.30pm. Full-day provision runs from 9am to 3.30pm. These are the session times on the admissions page, distinct from the older learning timetable described above.

For enquiries after the nursery application deadline or during the academic year, contact the school office at info@orleans.richmond.sch.uk. Availability can depend on the session: an opening may be for mornings or afternoons specifically. Where a place is available and the child meets the age criteria, families provide the application form, birth certificate and address evidence. Prospective families can also attend school tours and introductory talks.
