Nursery at Bramshall Meadows First School

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

A mud kitchen, a sandpit and Muddy Meadows give this nursery a distinctly practical character. Play takes place outside as well as indoors, with adult guidance alongside time for children to pursue their own interests. There is plenty here for small hands to investigate.

The nursery belongs to Bramshall Meadows First School on Ivinson Way in Uttoxeter. Funded places cover 15 to 30 hours, starting at the beginning of the term after a child turns three. In the school's Ofsted inspection on 25 and 26 March 2025, early years provision received a Good judgement. That judgement covers the school's early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) shapes learning through seven connected areas. In parent language, these bring together speaking and listening, movement, relationships and feelings, early reading and writing, number, creativity and discovering how the world works. Activities follow children's interests, while adults help extend what they notice and understand.

Songs, stories and nursery rhymes make language part of ordinary play. Adults also guide mathematical exploration, and topics use books selected to encourage conversation. Planning can change in response to children's interests. This gives children room to follow an idea rather than keeping every activity fixed in advance.

Outside, the mud kitchen and sandpit provide sensory exploration, while Muddy Meadows brings Forest School sessions into the early years programme. Children use the outdoor environment in all weathers. These experiences sit alongside physical play intended to develop core strength, so movement is part of learning rather than simply a break from it.

In March 2025, the early years curriculum had an ambitious, carefully ordered progression. Dough work, cutting with scissors and threading different materials helped children develop hand control for later writing. The practical activities have a clear purpose: building the physical skills that writing will require.

Care and Support

Each child has a key person who builds a dependable relationship and supports settling. Observation and shared play help that adult develop children's interests, with achievements and progress collected in an individual journal. The relationship gives families a consistent point of connection with their child's learning.

Class Dojo carries information about learning and ways families can support it at home. Early years leadership includes a deputy headteacher, and the team includes an apprentice teaching assistant. Nursery lunch is a charged extra; contact the school for current charges.

Children in early years were receiving good care in March 2025. SEND support needs attention. At school level, support for some pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities was inconsistent, limiting their achievement. Families should discuss how support will work for their child. The same inspection also identified weaknesses in some subjects' teaching and in revisiting gaps in learning; these were school-level concerns, rather than findings specifically about nursery teaching.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Staffordshire County Council and meet the normal deadline for their child's entry year. Choosing the nursery and applying for Reception are distinct decisions, even though both provisions belong to the same school.

Practical Information

Morning nursery sessions run from 9am to noon; afternoon sessions run from 1pm to 3.30pm. Ladybird Club accepts children from Nursery onwards and is staffed by the school's own team. Its before- and after-school provision operates Monday to Friday within a 7.30am to 5.30pm window, giving families an option beyond nursery sessions.

For a nursery application pack, contact the school office on 01889 221555. Families can also register nursery interest using the Expression of Interest form. Additional nursery sessions and lunch carry charges, so obtain the school's current charges before booking.
