Schools in Wakefield

The gothic spire of Wakefield Cathedral, which brought the city its formal status in 1888, anchors a compact centre of Victorian civic buildings and stone-paved market streets on the River Calder in West Yorkshire. The Calder was the city's engine. It made Wakefield an inland port in the 18th century, channelling corn, coal, and wool from the hinterland and drawing the county hall here as the administrative seat of the West Riding. Around 110,000 people live in the city today.

Crigglestone, in the southern suburbs, is widely regarded as one of Wakefield's more school-competitive quarters for state primary places, while Wakefield City Centre draws parents targeting schools across the central postcode. Wrenthorpe and Tingley form the outer residential ring, with Lofthouse Gate to the north; Northern Rail services from Wakefield Westgate reach Leeds in under twenty minutes.
