The gothic spire of Wakefield Cathedral, which brought the city its formal status in 1888, anchors a compact centre of Victorian civic buildings and stone-paved market streets on the River Calder in West Yorkshire. The Calder was the city's engine. It made Wakefield an inland port in the 18th century, channelling corn, coal, and wool from the hinterland and drawing the county hall here as the administrative seat of the West Riding.
