In July 2024, nursery children readily recognised numbers to 5 through a carefully ordered curriculum. Across early years, counting frames, career visitors and forest school linked learning to practical experiences. The nursery forms part of the primary school in West Ardsley. Its early years provision received a Good judgement at the Ofsted inspection on 9 and 10 July 2024.
That judgement covers early years within the school. The nursery-specific findings give parents something more concrete than a grade: a carefully ordered curriculum and children readily recognising numbers up to 5.
Number learning has a clear sequence. In July 2024, nursery children could identify numbers up to 5 readily, while an early years example showed children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) using a counting frame to explore ways of making 5. The physical resource makes an abstract idea something children can represent and examine. It also shows how support can connect directly to the learning taking place.
Stories open up subjects beyond the book itself. In early years, People That Help Us prompted interest in occupations; visits by radiographers, nurses, firefighters and police gave children people to connect with those ideas. Children spoke confidently about future jobs, including becoming a vet or nurse. For parents, the useful detail is the connection between reading, conversation and experience: a story becomes a reason to ask questions and talk about the wider world.
Forest school adds another setting for learning. Early years children developed communication and teamwork there, giving them opportunities to practise expressing ideas and cooperating. Together, these examples show learning through practical resources, conversations and shared activity, with different ways for children to take part.
Settling begins before children join their class. In July 2024, staff already knew early years children and their families ahead of that step, and children settled quickly. That preparation matters because the first classroom experience starts with some familiarity between the adults and the family.
Support also has a concrete classroom example. The counting frame used by children with SEND helped them explore number combinations, keeping assistance connected to the curriculum rather than treating it as a separate activity.
Early reading checks. The July 2024 inspection identified a school-level weakness in tracking progress for some pupils beginning to read. Some books contained sounds those pupils had not learned, slowing progress. This finding was not identified specifically as a nursery concern, but it is relevant context for families considering their child’s developing reading.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet its deadline. Treat the choice of nursery and the application for Reception as separate decisions: being part of the school’s early years provision does not itself secure the next place.
