Nursery at Horbury St Peter's and Clifton CofE (VC) Primary School

Songs, stories and time to follow an interest give the nursery at Horbury St Peter's and Clifton its character. It belongs to the school's Foundation Stage, where play and adult-guided learning sit alongside one another. The setting is part of a Church of England primary school on Shepstye Road in Horbury.
The school aims to develop independence and confidence, while giving children's home experiences a place in their learning. Its early-years team brings together nursery nurses, teachers and teaching assistants. For families, that means a nursery experience shaped by a teaching team within the wider school.
Play has protected time here. Adult-directed activities are combined with uninterrupted play chosen by children, giving them room to pursue an idea as well as take part in teaching. Topics draw on carefully selected books, with planning adjusted to children's interests and developing needs.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) connects learning to everyday development. Speaking and listening, movement and relationships provide the foundations; number, reading and writing, creative expression and exploring the world build on them. Songs, poems, nursery rhymes and stories give children repeated opportunities to hear and use language. Maths also has direct teaching each day, with resources throughout the learning areas so children can practise beyond a taught activity.
Outdoor learning is a regular part of the Foundation Stage. Lower and Upper Foundation classes use equipped outdoor areas, while indoor and outdoor spaces are adapted as children's needs change. Independence is an explicit aim of how these spaces are arranged.
In June 2022, Ofsted found that early-years activities supported learning and that staff understood young children's development. Established routines encouraged children to do more for themselves, making independence part of the day rather than simply a future goal.
Communication includes Evidence Me, which records significant learning moments and lets parents contribute experiences from home. Families receive learning reports and half-termly updates about the curriculum, giving them practical ways to connect home activities with nursery learning.
WellComm provides speech and language screening and activities tailored to a child's needs. Its traffic-light approach distinguishes children who need extra intervention from those for whom specialist advice may be considered. The Wellcomm: Big Book of Ideas supports individual planning.
Across the school, My Support Plans and Health Care Plans can be developed with parents and reviewed at least termly. Lifts serving every level and accessible toilets are concrete accessibility features. The June 2022 inspection also identified a school-wide concern: support for some children with SEND needed sharper assessment-informed targets. Families discussing additional needs should focus on what progress will be checked and how support will be adjusted.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet its deadline. Wakefield Council Admissions Team handles admissions beyond nursery; nursery enquiries go directly to the school. Treat these as separate decisions.
Contact the school on 01924 302965 for nursery admissions. Visits can be requested by emailing enquiries@st-peters.wakefield.sch.uk, offering families a chance to discuss their child's needs with the school before choosing the provision.
