A water tray becomes a language lesson at Greenhill: adults introduce words such as gurgle and trickle while children explore. That detail captures the nursery’s emphasis on talk through practical activity. Nursery forms part of Outwood Primary Academy Greenhill on Greenhill Road in Eastmoor, Wakefield, bringing early learning into a primary school setting.
Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good following the inspection on 8 and 9 July 2025. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Stories, games and rhymes give Nursery children ways to learn through participation. Language is a deliberate part of the activities: learning areas have vocabulary for children and staff to practise, so new words connect with something children can see or do. The emphasis is practical. At the water tray, children encounter words describing water’s movement rather than vocabulary taught in isolation.
Painting brings another example. Children use tertiary when describing a mixture of primary and secondary colours, with adults demonstrating how to use ambitious words. In July 2025, this teaching supported children’s communication and language development. These are concrete examples of early years learning: playing, talking and making things become opportunities to build understanding.
For learning together at home, Oxford Owl for Home provides eBooks, activity suggestions and advice for parents. Greenhill also provides an introduction to Read Write Inc. for families, helping parents understand the reading approach.
Settling begins with the Owlets programme, which helps children become accustomed to Nursery and prepares parents alongside them. Families are included in that preparation. It gives the start of nursery a shared focus, rather than treating readiness as something the child must manage alone.
In July 2025, children with special educational needs and/or disabilities were identified promptly and received appropriate support. Parents can raise concerns about SEND provision with the SEND coordinator by telephone, letter or email; the coordinator investigates and reports back within a week. That gives families a defined first step when support needs discussing.
Food precautions apply across the academy: nuts and foods containing nuts must stay at home. For a child with an intolerance or allergy, parents complete the Caterlink Special Diet Form. This makes dietary needs a practical part of preparation.
Attending Nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Parents must make a separate Reception application through Wakefield’s normal admissions process, meeting the applicable deadline. Applications use the local authority’s Common Application Form, on which parents express their school preferences.
The local authority communicates the decision on national offer day. If a preferred school refuses a place, families receive the reason and information about appealing. Treat choosing Nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.
Nursery enquiries can go through the academy office on 01924 942790 or by email to enquiries@greenhill.outwood.com. Families considering the academy can arrange an appointment with the Principal to look around.
For messages to a child’s teacher, parents can leave a message with reception. The academy aims to return calls within 48 hours, allowing families to make contact while teachers are occupied with teaching.
