Nursery at Outwood Primary Academy Kirkhamgate

Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.
Activities shaped around individual children give Kirkhamgate’s early years its character. Staff adapt learning to each child’s needs, while opportunities to explore and develop social skills sit alongside a curriculum with clear knowledge and skills to teach. For parents, that combines personal attention with purposeful learning.
The nursery belongs to Outwood Primary Academy Kirkhamgate on Brandy Carr Road, Wakefield. Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 1 and 2 October 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Exploration and learning with other children are part of the early years experience. In October 2024, the environment supported children’s social development, and the curriculum identified what they should learn to prepare for later education. In parent language, the emphasis is on acquiring knowledge and skills while learning to interact with others.
Adult involvement matters here. Staff’s exchanges with children were a strength in October 2024, and activities were adjusted to individual needs. This gives the teaching a personal dimension: the planned learning is accompanied by attention to the child taking part.
Read Write Inc., Fred Talk and Set 1 Sounds feature in the early years support for parents. These give families specific starting points for helping with reading at home. Oxford Owl adds activity ideas, advice and free eBooks, including a children’s eBook library. Home learning therefore has named resources parents can use alongside conversations with staff.
Parents can raise special educational needs and disability concerns with the school’s SEND coordinator by telephone, email or letter. The coordinator investigates and responds within a week. This gives families a defined first contact and response period when they have concerns about support.
Food rules apply across the academy: nuts and products containing them must stay at home. ISS Education handles catering, with a referral process for medical dietary needs arising from allergies, intolerances or conditions such as coeliac disease. The practical distinction is between the academy’s general food restriction and arrangements for an individual medical need.
Operation Encompass connects the academy with police information following domestic abuse incidents involving children. A safeguarding lead receives notification before the next school day, allowing support to respond to the child’s needs and wishes.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Wakefield’s local authority admissions process, using its Common Application Form and meeting the deadline for their application year. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.
The local authority communicates the application outcome. If a preferred school refuses a place, families receive the reason and information about appealing, giving them a clear next step.
For nursery enquiries, contact the academy on 01924 907436 or email enquiries@kirkhamgate.outwood.com. Families considering the academy can arrange an appointment to look around with the principal.
For calls about a child, parents can leave a message with the reception team when the teacher is teaching. The academy aims to return calls within 48 hours. Email or telephone is the appropriate enquiry route, since social media messages may go unmonitored.
