In October 2022, self-portrait drawing illustrated Newstead Green’s early years learning: children applied smudging and cross-hatching in a practical activity. The nursery belongs to Outwood Primary Academy Newstead Green, on Cow Lane in Havercroft, Wakefield. It is part of the primary academy’s provision.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at its inspection on 6 and 7 October 2022. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery inspection outcome.
Learning has a defined purpose. In October 2022, early years activities were planned around the particular knowledge and skills children should acquire. Children took part successfully, including using smudging and cross-hatching to draw self-portraits. For parents, that example makes the approach tangible: an art activity develops techniques children can demonstrate, rather than simply producing a finished picture.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is the framework for this stage of learning. Here, the emphasis on learning through activities sits alongside becoming familiar with routines. In October 2022, children in early years were learning those routines, with staff encouraging positive choices. Learning how to take part in the school day therefore sits alongside learning new skills.
Home reading support includes Oxford Owl, with activity suggestions and an eBook library. Parents can also use an introduction to Read Write Inc., plus Fred Talk and Set 1 Sounds materials. These give families concrete ways to explore reading together.
Communication about progress matters alongside classroom learning. In October 2022, parents valued the updates they received about their children’s development in early years. That information helps families understand their child’s progress.
For special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), the academy has a SEND coordinator. Parents can raise a concern by telephone, email or letter; the coordinator investigates and responds within a week. This gives families a defined first contact and a timescale for a response.
Operation Encompass connects the academy with police following domestic abuse incidents involving children. Information reaches the safeguarding lead before the next school day, allowing support to reflect the child’s needs and wishes.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline.
Applications go through the local authority using its Common Application Form. Wakefield Metropolitan District Council coordinates the process, and the local authority communicates decisions on national offer day. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.
Contact the academy’s main reception on 01226 722484 or email enquiries@newstead.outwood.com for enquiries. Families considering the academy can arrange an appointment with the principal to look around, giving them an opportunity to discuss their child’s circumstances in person.
Calendar planning. The academy has an INSET day on 23 October 2026, followed by October half term from 26 to 30 October. Keep these school calendar dates in mind when organising family commitments.
No. Families must apply separately for Reception through the local authority’s normal process, using its Common Application Form.
