At a Glance

Helping a friend, taking responsibility and sharing an idea are part of the early-years approach here. The Little Leaders Programme brings these habits into play and classroom routines, giving young children practical ways to contribute before leadership becomes a formal role.

Queen Elizabeth’s School, Wakefield welcomes girls and boys from age three. Its nursery classes are known as Foundation Stage 1 (FS1), with children able to start from their third birthday. This is the pre-preparatory provision, formerly named Wakefield Grammar Pre-Preparatory School, within the wider school.

The Nursery Day

Morning and afternoon sessions give the nursery day its structure, with lunch included in the afternoon option. Indoor learning alternates with time outdoors across the pre-preparatory timetable. For a young child, that means the day has changes of setting as well as classroom activity.

The Little Leaders approach extends into the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Its focus is concrete: children practise helping someone else, considering what comes next and expressing their own ideas. Play, daily routines and adult guidance are the vehicles for this learning. Sharing an idea or helping a friend becomes an opportunity to practise communication and responsibility.

Turn-taking, reflection and adults modelling behaviour also form part of the programme. Quieter children and those with additional needs receive attention within these activities, so participation need not depend on being the first child to speak.

Care and Support

Settling begins before the first term. Children and parents are invited to afternoon visits during the summer term and again before the autumn term starts. These offer opportunities to become familiar with the setting together before regular attendance begins.

Staff discuss children’s needs in daily briefings and team meetings. That creates a shared opportunity to consider support across the day. Within Little Leaders activities, adult guidance and supported turn-taking give children different ways to participate.

Lunch is prepared by the pre-preparatory school’s own catering team. Choices include sandwiches and salads alongside cooked dishes, fruit and desserts. The FS1 lunch and afternoon sessions both include the meal, which matters when comparing attendance patterns and their charges.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Ask the admissions team to confirm the progression requirements for existing FS1 pupils, including whether a further application or assessment is required.

The admissions process uses an online application followed by an age-appropriate assessment and taster. For Reception entry, the Foundation’s application guidance describes a play-based visit lasting 45 minutes to an hour, including observations of early number and literacy skills. Applications are accepted throughout the year, subject to space. This independent school’s route is through its admissions team.

Practical Information

FS1 charges depend on the sessions and days attended. The morning runs from 8.30am to 11.30am; a lunch option finishes at 1pm, while the afternoon runs from 11.30am to 3.15pm and includes lunch. Pre-preparatory morning care starts at 7.45am, with after-school options ending at 4.30pm or 6pm.

Eligible FS1 children can receive 15 funded education hours each week. Funding covers educational provision, excluding optional consumables and services such as snacks, trips and specialist lessons. Refer to the school for current charges when choosing a pattern.

Book an Open Doors event online or arrange an individual visit through admissions@wgsf.net or 01924 373943. Uniform is sold online by Perry Uniform. The school bus service accepts children from age eight, so nursery families need another travel arrangement.
