Play takes the lead at Lawefield: short carpet gatherings and small-group activities sit alongside time spent learning indoors and outside. This is the nursery provision within Wakefield Lawefield Primary School on Lawefield Lane, with entry from the term following a child’s third birthday.
A single nursery class forms part of the school’s early-years provision. A teacher works alongside Nursery Nurses, combining children’s interests with planned knowledge and skills. For parents, the defining feature is that balance between exploring independently and joining activities led by adults.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) here takes shape through play, conversation and group learning. Children spend much of their time in indoor and outdoor learning spaces; brief whole-class carpet activities bring them together, while smaller groups provide another format for learning. The session therefore has several kinds of activity rather than one continuous class lesson.
Early reading begins with phonemic awareness in nursery: developing awareness of the sounds within words. That gives the youngest children a starting point for later reading. Adults also follow children’s interests while introducing the knowledge and skills they want them to learn.
Art provides concrete examples of nursery activity. During Lawefield’s Great Draw 2026, nursery children explored Aboriginal Australian ground drawings. In another Great Draw project, they made kinetic mobiles, bringing movement into their artwork. These projects give creative work a shared theme and a finished piece to display.
World Book Day activities across early years included Gruffalo crumble made in a mud kitchen, Elmer painting, rainbow fish decoration and playdough characters. Stories became things to make and explore. In June 2024, Ofsted found that children across early years played and learnt happily together, with mathematical vocabulary reinforced through play.
The nursery aims to help children manage feelings, cooperate, persist with challenges and resolve disagreements. Its teacher and Nursery Nurses work towards these skills through interactions with children, connecting everyday play with learning how to get along.
Milk is available across the school, and children under 5 qualify for it free. Parents with queries or concerns can contact the office, which directs them to the appropriate member of staff; safeguarding concerns can be raised by asking for the safeguarding team.
The June 2024 inspection also identified a school-wide concern: activities and resources for some pupils struggling with mathematics needed better adaptation. That finding concerned pupils across the school, rather than a nursery-specific shortcoming.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. Wakefield Local Authority controls school admissions, with an online application route through its School Admissions service. Treat that application as a separate step when planning your child’s next year.
Children take either a morning place, from 8:45am to 11:45am, or an afternoon place, from 12:30pm to 3:30pm. Each pattern totals 15 hours in a typical week, making this a session-based nursery arrangement.
Morning drop-off and collection use the nursery playground on the field. Afternoon children are dropped off at the link corridor beside the front car park and collected from the nursery playground. The different afternoon entrance matters when organising handovers.
