Play, questions and growing independence shape the start in Snowdrop Class, Wakefield Snapethorpe Primary School’s nursery. Children can join from the term after their third birthday, becoming part of the school’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Learning takes place inside and outside, with activities planned around children’s interests and development.
At the Ofsted inspection on 25 and 26 June 2024, early years provision was graded Good. That judgement covers the school’s early years phase. It is not a separate nursery rating.
The EYFS approach here gives children opportunities to investigate, experiment and develop ideas through play. Staff plan experiences around individual needs and interests, so children have a starting point that connects with what already engages them. Indoor and outdoor learning are both part of that approach, giving exploration a place across the learning environment.
In June 2024, children worked together in play and learning, understood expectations and practised taking turns. Early mathematics had several opportunities within the curriculum. Adults recognised when to step in and extend learning, helping children move beyond what they could already do. For parents, this gives a useful picture of play with a learning purpose: children explore alongside others while adults help develop their understanding.
The curriculum built knowledge in a planned order from Nursery onwards. Children also became more independent and confident, including when explaining their learning. Those everyday skills matter alongside early mathematical understanding: joining in, taking a turn and expressing an idea are part of the nursery experience.
Positive relationships with adults supported children’s confidence in June 2024. Activities and the curriculum were adjusted for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), enabling participation across learning areas. Support was part of the learning itself.
For concerns about development, learning or wellbeing, the class teacher is the first contact, with the SENDCO available for further discussion. The wider school SEND team includes an Assistant SENDCO, and staff work with external professionals when needed. This gives families a route for discussing needs and agreeing next steps.
Lunch requires preparation at home. Nursery children staying over lunchtime bring a healthy packed lunch; school dinners are not offered to nursery pupils.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Wakefield Admissions and meet the normal application deadline. Treat that application as a separate task from arranging nursery attendance.
Preparation for the change includes parent and child transition booklets covering routines and skills families can practise at home. Sharing the child booklet before school starts is intended to help children become familiar with the next stage. This preparation supports transition; it does not secure admission.
The 30-hour option for eligible working parents runs from 8:45am to 3:00pm Monday to Thursday, finishing at 1:45pm on Friday. Keeping a child until 3:00pm on Friday carries an additional charge. Ask the school for current charges.
For the 15-hour free entitlement, one pattern combines Monday and Tuesday, 8:45am to 3:00pm, with Wednesday collection at 11:15am. The alternative combines Wednesday, 1:00pm to 3:00pm, with Thursday and Friday, 8:45am to 3:00pm. These patterns concentrate attendance into part of the week, which matters when organising work and collection.
Wraparound care is not offered for nursery children. Nursery enquiries go to the school office on 01924 367396 or admin@snapethorpeprimary.co.uk. The office is also the contact for arranging a nursery place.
