Nursery at Abbey Primary School

Sensory aids, speech and language support and parent involvement give Abbey’s school-wide approach to inclusion concrete form. Its nursery belongs to Abbey Primary School on Glastonbury Crescent, Mossley Estate, Walsall. This is a mixed state primary with a starting age of three.
The school aims to adapt learning to individual needs. For families considering its nursery, that means understanding the support arrangements alongside the provision itself.
Learning adaptations form part of the school’s approach across its classes. Teachers adjust activities to children’s attainment; where special educational needs are identified, changes can extend to the learning environment, communication aids and additional adult support. These arrangements are tailored to the child.
Physical resources include a sensory room, ear defenders and fidget toys. Their purpose is practical: children with sensory needs can receive support that addresses more than the learning task alone.
Parents have a defined part in planning additional support. Concerns about learning or inclusion go first to the class teacher, with referral to the special educational needs coordinator where appropriate. Support follows a cycle of assessing needs, planning action, putting it into practice and reviewing progress. Parents take part in the initial discussion and termly reviews, giving them opportunities to explain what they see at home.
Speech and language work has a specific staffing arrangement. An NHS Speech Language Therapist assesses targeted pupils and plans support during the Autumn and Summer terms; a trained teaching assistant then delivers the programmes. Higher Level Teaching Assistants have received additional training in Wellcomm, ELSA and leading nurture groups. These are school-wide arrangements rather than a separate nursery staffing model.
Joining support also involves families. For children starting school in September, a Summer-term introduction programme and a parent meeting help prepare for school routines. The special educational needs coordinator meets new parents whose children have identified SEND before entry, so concerns can be discussed in advance.
Medical needs have their own planning process. Individual Health and Care Plans are developed with parents and the school nurse. Medication information is shared with relevant staff, and parents receive email notification when medication is administered.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and securing a school place as separate decisions; familiarity with the setting does not itself secure admission.
Enquiries go to the school office on 01922 710753 or postbox@abbey.walsall.sch.uk. The address is Glastonbury Crescent, Mossley Estate, Walsall, WS3 2RP.
The school uniform includes grey or charcoal trousers or a skirt, a white or burgundy shirt or polo, and a burgundy cardigan or jumper. Logos are optional on the shirts and knitwear. Clothing and footwear should carry the child’s name and year group, helping staff return misplaced items.
Uniform adaptations can be considered for children with SEND or medical needs. This gives families a route to discuss clothing that suits their child’s circumstances.
