Story stacks, puppets and conversation give County Bridge’s nursery its character. Books are part of the learning spaces, and parents join classroom story sessions each week. Reading starts as a shared activity, with adults and children exploring stories together.
First Steps caters for two-year-olds alongside the school’s Nursery provision, within its early years foundation stage (EYFS). The May 2022 inspection described nursery provision for children aged two to four. This is the nursery at County Bridge Primary School on Anson Road in Walsall.
Play and adult-led activities both shape learning. Children have extended time to pursue their own ideas, while staff join their play, introduce vocabulary and ask questions. The EYFS curriculum prioritises learning to communicate, listening to others and managing feelings alongside early reading, writing and mathematics. For parents, that means conversation and social development have a deliberate place in the day.
Indoor and outdoor provision give children opportunities to explore and revisit learning. Books sit alongside puppets, story props and other printed materials, including magazines and information books. Nursery children explore a selected author’s stories and follow pre-phonics learning. Talk for Writing sessions develop storytelling and putting events in order, giving children ways to understand and retell what they hear.
Daily mathematics sessions introduce counting, forming numbers and understanding how numbers work. Games and objects children can handle make concepts tangible; planned activities during independent play let them use that learning indoors and outside. In May 2022, inspectors found that First Steps and Nursery children developed secure mathematical foundations through practical activities woven into everyday routines.
Technology also has a place: nursery children use iPads, an interactive whiteboard and electronic toys, alongside introductions to online safety. Local visits extend learning beyond the classroom. Jigsaw supports work on feelings and wellbeing, while Inspire mornings and learning workshops bring parents into children’s learning.
Support begins before nursery starts. Home visits help staff identify additional needs and arrange access to services early, giving families an opportunity to share what they know about their child before classroom routines begin.
Communication and language receive specific attention through Wellcomm, Early Talk Boost and individual speech and language programmes. Staff work with partners including Speech and Language Therapy and the Early Years SEN Team to develop targets suited to children’s needs. For children with SEND, termly meetings with the inclusion lead give parents time to discuss support, progress and next steps.
Food education is practical too. Early years children have access to healthy snacks and learn about caring for their bodies and eating healthily. The school’s lunch information directs families with food-allergy concerns to catering staff and provides an allergen-matrix link through Shire Catering Services. That offers a specific contact for discussing dietary concerns.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process by the applicable deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as separate decisions.
