Little Diggers, Rockets and Stars give Delves’ youngest provision its own identity within the infant school on Botany Road, Walsall. There are two distinct stages: Little Diggers for two-year-olds and the LA Nursery for children who are three by 31 August before a September start. Families therefore need to distinguish the younger provision from the main nursery when choosing a place.
Little Diggers takes a maximum of 16 children, split into morning and afternoon groups of eight. The main nursery has up to 78 places: 39 in the morning and a different 39 in the afternoon. These are separate session groups, a useful distinction when planning childcare.
Adult teaching and activities children choose themselves both feature in the early years approach. Skills are revisited regularly across the two, giving children opportunities to practise through their own interests as well as with an adult. The curriculum incorporates the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Here, learning involves repeated skills practice through adult teaching and activities children choose, alongside opportunities to share stories and explore books through the School Library Bus. Borrowing books gives families a way to continue that early reading experience at home.
Resilience, Possibilities and Growth Mindset are the school’s named curriculum drivers. Delves aims to help children develop confidence and treat mistakes as opportunities to learn. That gives parents a clear sense of the intended approach to trying something unfamiliar.
The School Library Bus adds a concrete setting for sharing stories. It contains traditional tales, fiction and non-fiction, and each child can borrow two books using their library pass. Parents and guardians can also choose books with children after school on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. This creates a practical link between reading at school and stories at home.
Rockets has a nursery lead teacher, while Stars has a higher level teaching assistant. Two learning support assistants complete the nursery team. Little Diggers has its own lead, with separate learning support assistant roles for the morning and afternoon sessions.
For families needing additional support, the school’s special educational needs coordinator can be contacted through school. Delves says it works with families and external agencies to address barriers to participation. Wheelchair and disability access are provided on the premises.
A wider pastoral team provides a contact between home and school, with individual support for parents where possible. Its remit includes concerns about a child’s education and family circumstances such as bereavement or family breakdown, giving parents a route for discussing issues that may affect their child.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Parents must make a separate application through the normal admissions process, submitting it online to their home local authority. Delves participates in Walsall Council’s coordinated arrangements.
For the September 2026 intake, the application window ran from 1 September 2025 to 15 January 2026. That cycle has passed. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as separate decisions.
Longer provision is conditional. The main nursery can offer 30 hours to families eligible under the Government funding scheme when part-time places remain unfilled. Eligibility alone therefore does not settle availability.
Application forms for both provisions come from the school office. Little Diggers children can join its waiting list at any point and become eligible to start in the term following their second birthday. Parents must keep contact details and addresses up to date while on that list.
