Counting through play, singing rhymes and sustained attention to language characterised Edgar Stammers’ early years provision in January 2023. The nursery belongs to Edgar Stammers Primary Academy on Harden Road in Coalpool, Walsall. For parents, the useful emphasis is on children learning through everyday activities and building relationships with the adults around them.
Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 17 and 18 January 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating. The early years findings give a picture of children enjoying learning, using indoor and outdoor resources and becoming familiar with routines.
Play and rhymes provided opportunities to practise numbers in January 2023. Early years children counted regularly through both, giving them repeated chances to use counting in activities they enjoyed. Early mathematics formed part of their play.
Communication received close attention at that inspection too. Adults worked on children’s language throughout activities, so learning to express themselves was woven into the day. Alongside counting, that is a concrete picture of early learning: children developing words and number skills while taking part in practical experiences.
The learning environment extended outside as well as indoors at the January 2023 inspection. Children used resources in both spaces. That gives families a useful point of comparison: the experience observed included outdoor learning alongside activity inside, with children engaging with the resources around them.
Settling into routines and forming relationships were strengths of the early years experience in January 2023. Children became accustomed to routines quickly and developed affectionate connections with adults. For a child beginning nursery, those two elements matter together: familiarity with what happens next and adults they feel comfortable with.
Parents also appreciated updates about their children’s progress at that time. This connects the learning day with home, helping families understand how their child is getting on.
At school level, meals are prepared on site, and parents can view menus through MCAS, with updates uploaded weekly. Families should notify the school about special dietary requirements. Children may bring water bottles, while lunchboxes should exclude sweets, fizzy drinks and glass drinks bottles. These are practical school arrangements to keep in mind when preparing food and drinks.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Walsall Schools admissions, following the normal application deadline. Choosing the nursery and applying for school are separate decisions.
Children allocated a Reception place take part in introductory sessions during Transition Week. They meet staff and classmates and spend time in their future classrooms. This preparation helps make the next setting familiar; it does not establish an admissions advantage.
