Conversation and play give Emmanuel’s nursery its character: children are encouraged to explain what they are doing, building vocabulary alongside confidence. This is provision for three and four year olds within an independent Christian school in Walsall. The school aims to combine learning with love for God and care for others, making its religious ethos a meaningful part of the choice for families.
In June 2025, three nursery children shared teaching with the Reception year group. That describes the group at that time, rather than a limit on places.
Learning combines play with activities guided by adults. In March 2024, early-years teaching supported children’s development through tasks suited to their interests and needs. Communication received deliberate attention: children talked about their activities rather than simply completing them. This gives everyday play a language-building purpose.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum includes attention to letter sounds, with children’s development checked through regular progress records. In March 2024, early-years children were developing as expected for their ages. The emphasis was on building skills across the curriculum, with speaking and early literacy receiving specific attention.
For parents, the important combination is time to learn through play and adult direction. Progress recording gives staff a way to follow children’s development alongside those daily activities.
In March 2024, early-years staff had appropriate training and were deployed to support children’s wellbeing. Calm, patient responses helped children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) feel secure and approach learning confidently. This is a concrete example of support shaping the child’s experience, rather than simply an inclusion aim.
Families can also use the school’s Early Help support. Options include help with behaviour, SEN support, parenting-course referrals and food-bank referrals; support can escalate through Walsall Early Help Partnership where further help is needed.
Safety oversight. In March 2024, failures to address legionella risks affected health-and-safety requirements, including EYFS requirements. By December 2024, remedial work and ongoing contractor checks were in place, but the proprietor’s simultaneous safeguarding-lead role breached statutory guidance. In June 2025, a separate safeguarding lead and a deputy were in place, and the monitoring inspection confirmed compliance with the standards it considered. These dated findings matter when weighing care arrangements.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Confirm Reception application arrangements with the school; sharing teaching with that year group should not be treated as an admissions advantage.
The school’s application procedure requires parents to confirm support for its Christian basis of faith, vision and ethos. Families choosing the nursery therefore need to consider both the daily experience and whether that religious foundation fits their expectations for continued schooling.
The normal EYFS day runs from 8:30 am to 3:20 pm. Occasional shorter days at the end of term are notified in advance. Additional wraparound services are offered, giving families another option alongside the nursery day.
