Counting small collections, exploring shapes and explaining a creation give Greenfield’s nursery learning a practical character. For children aged 3–4, this is the nursery provision within Greenfield Primary School on Coalheath Lane in Shelfield, Walsall. A nursery teacher sits within a wider team that includes an EYFS lead and a special educational needs coordinator (SENDCo).
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) organises learning into seven areas rather than separate school subjects. Nursery mathematics connects number work with language: children practise counting beyond five, matching an object to each number they say and recognising that the final number gives the total. This makes counting about understanding quantities, rather than simply repeating a sequence.
Shapes and patterns bring another practical strand. Children explore circles, triangles, rectangles and cuboids, choose shapes for building and combine them into new forms. Comparing weight, capacity and length introduces mathematical ideas through objects. Repeating patterns using sticks and leaves connect those ideas with familiar materials.
Early years art includes experimenting with tools, materials, texture and colour. Children explain how they made their creations, giving them a reason to put their thinking into words. Together, these activities link making, noticing and talking rather than treating each as an isolated skill.
Before starting, children can visit with their families to begin getting to know the school. Joining support can include further visits and meetings with the new class teacher, with contact between Greenfield and the previous setting. Joining support can be adapted to the child’s needs.
For additional needs, WellComm is a named early years intervention. Across the school, children identified with SEND have at least three reviews each school year, with targets recorded in a Personalised Learning Plan. A Pupil Passport records individual adjustments. Parents contribute to reviews, so support can be discussed and revised together.
School communication uses Arbor, with email and text also carrying information. Ongoing medical needs are supported through individual care plans developed with parents and health professionals. School meals are supplied by Mellors Catering; orders go through ParentPay, with an 8.30am same-day deadline. Families paying for meals should ask the school for current charges.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate online application through their home local authority and meet the deadline for their entry year. Walsall Council coordinates Greenfield’s Reception admissions.
For the 2026/27 admission year, nursery attendance confers no priority. After children whose EHCP names the school, the criteria cover care status, qualifying medical or social circumstances, siblings and distance. Choose the nursery for the nursery experience itself.
Separately, support when changing classes includes staff meetings to share information and additional visits where needed. This helps continuity of care; it does not change the admissions decision.
Contact the school office on 01922 682234 or email postbox@greenfieldprimary.co.uk for nursery enquiries. Visits can be arranged through the office, including discussion with the SENDCo for children with additional needs.
Drop-off and collection take place in the Nursery yard, with children handed directly to their class teachers. The school car park closes at the beginning and end of the school day, so factor this into the journey.
