Nursery at Hydesville Tower School

A conservatory-style story area and Forest School in Walsall Arboretum give Hydesville Tower School’s nursery two distinct settings for learning. Children have their own classrooms and play spaces within the school site on Broadway North, Walsall. This is school-attached provision with a day that combines adult-led activities and play chosen by children.
Entry is offered during the term of a child’s second birthday, with nursery provision extending to age four. At the September 2023 ISI inspection, the early years cohort numbered 35; that was an attendance figure for early years at that time, rather than a nursery capacity. The inspection found that early years planning supported good progress.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) gives everyday activities a clear purpose. Children practise choosing equipment, sharing, explaining what they need and listening to instructions. Physical independence includes dressing for PE and developing the hand control needed for writing. Literacy and mathematics sit alongside creative work and learning about the surrounding world. Adult-led learning is balanced with time for children to follow their interests.
A nursery veterinary role-play activity seen in September 2023 brought several skills together: children practised writing and mathematics while learning about animals, sharing resources and waiting their turn. Teaching developed vocabulary and encouraged exploration. Counting activities outdoors also helped children understand number, shape and size. These are concrete examples of learning through play, rather than separate exercises with little connection to children’s interests.
Indoors, the conservatory-style space provides a setting for stories. Outside, children have an Early Years learning area and a purpose-built outdoor classroom. The nursery playground has artificial grass and markings for games. Space on the school site is limited, but secure access to neighbouring Walsall Arboretum extends the possibilities. Weekly Forest School sessions bring nature into the learning programme; September 2023 early years findings linked outdoor play and arboretum visits with developing physical confidence.
Each nursery practitioner acts as key worker for a group of no more than eight children, giving families a consistent staff contact. The team includes a nursery head and deputy, both with foundation degrees in Early Childhood Studies. The nursery head also holds the Early Years designated safeguarding lead role. In September 2023, every early years staff member had paediatric first aid training.
Social learning has practical routines. Children earn stickers for effort, kindness and manners, choosing a small reward after collecting ten. September 2023 early years findings also showed that children were helped to express emotions and understand hygiene and healthy eating. The application form invites information about dietary requirements, medical conditions, SEND and existing support, making these needs part of the initial conversation.
Nursery charges include milk, an afternoon snack and a hot lunch. Breakfast and a light tea carry additional termly charges. Breakfast typically means toast or cereal; tea can include sandwiches and vegetable sticks. These meal arrangements matter when choosing a longer day.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Treat Reception as a separate admissions process and apply through the normal route for the place you want. For Hydesville, the school’s application form includes Reception, and its admissions process starts with contacting the team to discuss availability. Offers depend on availability and the admission requirements applying when an offer is made.
Children’s familiarity with the school is separate from entitlement to a place. Plan the next stage as an admissions decision, rather than assuming that nursery enrolment secures it.
Term-time nursery opening hours run from 7.30 am to 6.00 pm. The nursery describes an included attendance period of 8.00 am to 4.00 pm, with an extra charge for the earlier start. The teaching day runs from 8.45 am to 3.25 pm.
Part-time attendance. The nursery page allows part-time starts, followed by full-time attendance from the summer term before Reception. However, the 2026/27 fee terms describe full-time places, with a possible three-day first term for settling, followed automatically by full-time attendance. Agree the applicable pattern before accepting a place.
Holiday clubs operate from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm, with attendance chosen by families and wider opening dependent on demand. Closures include bank holidays, INSET days and specified Christmas and summer breaks.
Funded provision includes 15 hours for three- and four-year-olds from the term following their third birthday, and 30 hours for eligible working families. Working-family claims require a valid HMRC code and periodic renewal. Charges are billed by term; contact the school for current charges.
Uniform includes green joggers and a sweatshirt, a white polo shirt and shoes without laces. Forest Friday requires wellies and an all-in-one waterproof suit. Complimentary nursery tasters let parents and children attend together; personal tours can also be booked. Admissions enquiries go to 01922 748817. For collection and drop-off, families are encouraged to use parking on Arboretum Road or Buchanon Road, as vehicle access to the grounds is restricted.
