At a Glance

Songs, stories and children taking charge of their own resources give Millfields its character. In May 2024, children were fetching materials independently and helping to put them away through a tidy up team. Independence here has a practical expression: children take part in looking after the space they use.

This local authority nursery school stands on the Walsall Academy site in Bloxwich and caters for children aged two to four. For three- and four-year-olds, there are 96 part-time places, split into 48 morning and 48 afternoon places. It is a nursery school in its own right, so the next step is a move to primary school.

The Nursery Day

Language runs through the day. At the May 2024 inspection, sessions began with focused group learning; stories, singing and rhymes helped children develop vocabulary and early reading skills. In May 2024, children also practised counting, explored shapes and worked on measuring. Sounds within words are introduced when children are ready, rather than treated as the same starting point for everyone.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the framework, with Development Matters guiding planning. In parent terms, this brings together learning to communicate, manage feelings and move confidently with early reading, mathematics, creative work and understanding the world. Adult-guided activities sit alongside play that children choose themselves. Mark-making through painting and drawing, retelling stories and developing role-play storylines give those areas a concrete shape.

Children can move between learning areas and use materials with more than one possible purpose. At the May 2024 inspection, some children with additional needs received specialist support in a sensory room. This provided a specific space for support alongside participation with other children.

Learning across the session. The May 2024 inspection identified occasions when activities did too little to help children retain earlier learning. The improvement needed was more consistent support throughout the day, so the benefit of focused teaching carries into subsequent play.

Care and Support

A key person approach gives children a familiar adult relationship. Settling starts before the first session: two staff members make a home visit, usually lasting around 15 minutes, and new children spend an hour at nursery with a parent. The first day is shortened at both ends. These steps introduce people and routines gradually.

Parents contribute information about their children. The May 2024 inspection also described regular story cafes that helped families support learning at home. In May 2024, additional needs were recognised promptly, sometimes before a child started, and children with SEND received support to participate in the curriculum. With parental agreement, the SEND coordinator can involve other agencies for advice. Safeguarding arrangements were effective at that inspection.

Daily milk is free, and children are encouraged to drink plain water from a flask brought from home. Families contribute a piece of fruit each week for shared snacks. Breakfast and tea are included in the paid term-time provision spanning the longer day.

Moving On to Reception

Attending Millfields does not guarantee a Reception place. Families need to make a separate application through the normal Reception admissions process and meet its deadline. Choosing this nursery and securing a primary-school place are separate decisions.

Preparation for that move includes practising independence, communication and early learning skills. In May 2024, children with SEND were supported both through specialist provision and learning with their peers, helping them prepare for primary school.

Practical Information

Morning and afternoon places form the part-time model. The nursery also offers paid provision during term time between 8am and 4.30pm for children aged two to four. Contact the office for current charges.

The funding offer comprises 15 hours for funded two-year-olds, 15 hours for all three- and four-year-olds, and 30 hours for qualifying parents, with the latter offered for up to 30 children. Registration and appointments to look around can be arranged by telephone on 01922 714830.

Uniform is optional: royal blue layers and sky blue tops are the school colours, and unbranded alternatives are accepted. Children do not need a PE kit. Parents and carers must keep vehicles off the nursery site, which matters when planning collection and drop-off.
