Small family groups give Ogley Hay's nursery day its shape. Each child has a key worker, with time divided between their group and the wider nursery, including outdoor learning. That gives children a familiar adult alongside opportunities to explore beyond their group.
On Brickiln Street in Brownhills, this nursery school serves children aged two to five. Little Learners caters for two- to three-year-olds, while the nursery groups cater for children aged three to four. Specialist support includes the Nurture Hub, where children with additional needs can access learning adapted to their needs.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings care and learning together: adults respond to children's interests, support their relationships and recognise that development happens at different speeds. Here, activities follow those interests, and the routine combines activities directed by adults with choices made by children. Small-group time sits alongside access to indoor and outdoor spaces. Labelled equipment helps children find and use things independently.
Ofsted's inspection on 5 January 2023 described teaching tailored to individual children, with the Ogley Hay learning goals providing clear learning destinations. Everyday routines brought counting and early sound awareness into play: children counted their group and explored word sounds through jungle stories. Stories, action songs and nursery rhymes gave them repeated opportunities to listen and join in.
Other learning examples included searching the forest area for worms and spiders, using personal photographs to explore change over time, and seeing chicks emerge from eggs. Clay work involved an artist; outings included the theatre and a farm. These activities connect ideas to things children can handle, observe and discuss.
Settling starts before the first independent session. Two staff members offer a home visit, giving families time to discuss concerns and children a chance to meet nursery adults in familiar surroundings. Families can decline it. A welcome visit then gives parent and child an hour together at nursery.
Initial sessions alone last an hour, with longer attendance introduced when the child is ready. The pace follows the individual, and a familiar comforter can come along. This makes settling a sequence of manageable steps rather than an immediate full session.
Parents can discuss progress at individual teacher appointments and join a Celebration Day each term. Family support also includes confidential conversations in a private office. The staff structure includes early years teachers, a SEN lead practitioner and nursery SEN support, giving families identifiable roles for learning and additional needs.
In January 2023, nurture support was highly effective and safeguarding arrangements were effective, with staff training and prompt handling of concerns. Breakfast also offered practice in independence: children served cereal and poured milk themselves. For paid wraparound attendance, children bring a packed lunch.
Children leave Ogley Hay for different primary schools. Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place: parents must make a separate Reception application. Treat the next school place as a separate decision from choosing this nursery.
The nursery's approach is to give children time to develop friendships before moving to their allocated Reception class. That preparation concerns the child's experience of change; it does not secure admission.
For nursery children taking 15 hours, the pattern includes four mornings from 9am to 11.30am and a full day from 9am to 3pm. Afternoon groups run from 12.15pm to 3.15pm, with a flexible pattern across three days. The 30-hour nursery pattern runs Monday to Friday, 9am to 3pm.
Little Learners mornings run from 8.45am to 11.45am, afternoons from 12.15pm to 3.15pm, and full days from 8.45am to 3.15pm. Parents can usually choose morning or afternoon attendance and their nursery full day.
Funding includes 15-hour places for all three- and four-year-olds and eligible two-year-olds, alongside 30-hour provision for eligible working families. Two-year-old routes include Time 2 Start and Working Family funding; paid places are also offered. Paid wraparound extends morning nursery attendance for three- and four-year-olds, while Little Learners extra sessions require advance booking and a payment agreement. Contact the school for current charges.
