A weekly puppet show gives Reedswood’s nursery children something to talk about, retell and explore together. Conversation is a deliberate part of learning here, beginning in Tiny Twos and continuing through Nursery. That makes language development a defining feature of the provision.
At the academy on Bentley Drive in Walsall, Tiny Twos caters for two-year-olds, while Nursery serves children aged three to four. For 2026–2027, the admission numbers are 12 for Tiny Twos and 60 for Nursery; nursery places may be divided into part-time patterns at the academy’s discretion. Ofsted’s January 2026 inspection judged the school’s early years provision to be Strong standard. This judgement covers early years within the school.
Learning combines activities chosen by children with sessions directed by adults. Topics, seasonal changes and children’s interests help shape the curriculum, giving staff several ways to connect learning with things that already interest a child.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together early learning and personal development. Tiny Twos concentrates on movement, relationships and communication. Nursery adds early literacy, mathematics, creative expression and exploration of the world. Playing, investigating and persisting with an activity are part of that learning, alongside developing ideas and trying different solutions.
Stories have a practical purpose. The weekly puppet show encourages nursery children to describe what happened and retell the story themselves. Staff also introduce letter sounds. These activities give children reasons to listen, speak and begin making connections between sounds and language.
Outdoor learning extends beyond occasional good-weather play. Children use the outdoor areas throughout the year, in most weather, and regularly take part in Forest School within the school grounds. The woodland setting gives them opportunities to build, make friends and test physical skills. In January 2026, indoor and outdoor spaces supported children’s hand skills, independent choices and decision-making.
New nursery pupils receive home visits from their class teacher. These visits give families an opportunity to discuss their child’s needs.
Communication continues after joining. In January 2026, early years staff used information about children’s interests and experiences at home and updated parents on progress. This gives families a role in shaping staff’s understanding of their child.
Across the school, SEND support is coordinated by a SENCo, with a deputy SENCo and SEND assistant. Individual Education Plans on Edukey have targets reviewed each half term, with termly discussions for parents. Visual timetables and now/next boards help children understand the sequence of activities. A hall lift provides access to the early years classrooms. Teaching staff hold qualified teacher status or are working towards it through a recognised training provider.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority, including those living outside Walsall. For September 2027 entry, the deadline is 15 January 2027. Nursery attendance confers no priority in that admissions round.
For children with SEND moving between year groups, support can include a meeting involving the family and class teacher, extra time with the new teacher and room, and a transition booklet where needed. These arrangements help children prepare for change; they do not alter the Reception application process.
Nursery morning sessions run from 8:45 to 11:45; afternoon sessions run from 12:30 to 3:30. Universal 15-hour nursery places are offered, alongside 30-hour places for families who qualify for that funding or choose to pay for extra hours. Tiny Twos offers 15-hour funded places to families eligible for two-year-old funding, as well as paid places.
