Woodland animal homes, minibeast hunts and stories gave Sandbank’s nursery day a concrete character at the inspection of 8 and 9 February 2023. This is a nursery school in Bloxwich, Walsall, serving children aged two to five. The inspection described provision centred on young children’s learning, care and growing confidence.
Ofsted’s inspection on 8 and 9 February 2023 described children who were happy, safe and keen to learn. Adults put children’s interests and needs first, while clear boundaries helped them understand what was expected. For parents, that combines room to explore with a predictable daily framework.
At the inspection of 8 and 9 February 2023, books recurred across the day, with adults sharing stories suitable for children’s ages. Daily phonics activities gave children practice with unfamiliar sounds; songs and rhymes added another way to join in. Early reading and mathematics were taught by trained staff. These activities gave children repeated opportunities to practise, rather than leaving learning to a single group session.
Construction equipment encouraged children to work together. Outdoors, climbing and cycling developed physical skills, while forest school turned nature into material for learning. Activities linked to The Gruffalo included looking for minibeasts and making homes for woodland animals. A familiar story therefore extended into practical exploration.
The curriculum followed a planned sequence, with staff adapting learning to children’s interests and needs. Adults tackled misunderstandings and revisited earlier learning: displays about Chinese New Year and number provided prompts for conversation. That gave children something concrete to help them remember.
Minibus trips extended experiences beyond the nursery. Destinations included woodland, a farm, an outdoor activity area and a castle. Alongside the activities on site, these outings introduced children to different places and experiences.
At the February 2023 inspection, established routines helped children settle into nursery life. Adults supported them as they played alongside others, developed friendships and expressed their ideas. Learning about festivals and different cultures sat alongside this social development. Children were growing in confidence, and behaviour difficulties were rare; staff responded promptly when problems arose.
In February 2023, support for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) included accurate identification of needs and work with local agencies. Depending on the child, provision included adapted learning, extra adult help and resources made for individual needs. Inspectors found that children with SEND achieved very well. The practical strength was support shaped around the child.
Safeguarding was effective at the February 2023 inspection. Staff received regular training, recorded concerns and passed them on, while leaders checked decisions and maintained links with external agencies. Employment checks took place before staff began work. These systems supported both children’s safety and access to additional family help.
Attending Sandbank does not guarantee a Reception place. Nursery attendance and Reception admission are separate processes: families must make a separate application through the normal Reception admissions route by its deadline.
At the February 2023 inspection, preparation for the next stage also happened through everyday learning. Stories, early mathematics, physical activities and supported friendships built skills children could take with them. That preparation is separate from the allocation of a school place.
