Natural materials, objects to investigate and play shaped by children's interests give All Saints' nursery its character. The Curiosity Approach brings exploration into shared indoor and outdoor learning spaces, with activities adapted for the different ages using them. This is the school's own nursery on Castle Street in Wellingborough, within a Church of England setting.
Early years provision was judged Good at the Ofsted inspection of 28 and 29 June 2022. That judgement covers the school's early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum combines planned learning with responses to what children are interested in and ready to learn. Staff use observations to shape activities, drawing on Development Matters guidance. Weekly planning can change as children's needs change. For parents, that means children's interests influence the learning alongside the skills staff intend to teach.
The Curiosity Approach gives that principle a practical form. Children investigate real objects, explore natural materials and make things with recycled resources and loose parts, indoors and outside. The emphasis is on handling, experimenting and choosing how to use things. Shared learning spaces have activities adjusted for the ages and developmental needs of the children using them.
Early literacy has named teaching approaches alongside this exploration. Read Write Inc introduces letter shapes and their sounds in nursery, while Kinetic Letters also begins at this stage. Mathematics includes daily teaching and opportunities to practise through play. White Rose guides the maths planning, with Numberblocks used where appropriate; children explore numbers within ten and practise recognising quantities without counting each item.
In June 2022, children independently explored butterfly development and used words including caterpillar and chrysalis confidently. Adults also prompted them to apply their number knowledge through questions. There was a curriculum caveat: in some subjects, the sequence of knowledge beginning in nursery needed clearer definition, and checks on learning were inconsistent. These concerns sat alongside the positive early years findings.
The nursery class teacher also holds the Forest School teacher role and is identified as an unqualified teacher. Nursery teaching assistants support the class, while the deputy headteacher leads early years. That gives families a clear picture of the team structure and the teaching qualification attached to the nursery teacher role.
My Happy Mind is used in nursery as part of the school's approach to emotional development. Modules include Celebrate, which explores personal strengths, and Relate, which focuses on relationships. Children practise breathing exercises daily before learning. A parent app lets families use the same techniques at home, giving those routines a connection beyond the classroom.
For children with additional needs, staff work with the SENCo and external professionals. Parents contribute to identifying needs, take part in discussions with professionals and attend termly reviews of individual education plans. The Family and Pastoral Support Officer can also arrange an Early Help Assessment to identify family needs and coordinate support.
Attending All Saints' nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route by the relevant deadline.
Shared learning environments provide familiarity with the next stage, with activities adapted for different ages. That continuity is a learning arrangement, not an assurance of admission.
