Granted a royal market charter by King John in 1201, Wellingborough stands as one of Northamptonshire's oldest trading towns, sited north of the River Nene between Northampton and Kettering. Its Anglo-Saxon predecessor, recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Wendelburie, was already a settlement of consequence in the Nene valley.
