Purposeful play gives Little Owls its shape: children follow their own interests alongside activities guided by adults, with learning adjusted as their needs develop. This is Bozeat Community Primary School’s pre-school provision, at a school welcoming children from age 3 on Harrold Road in Bozeat.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 20 and 21 September 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings care and learning together. Communication, movement and emotional development receive particular emphasis, alongside early reading and writing, maths, exploring the world and creative expression. For parents, the important distinction is that learning happens through play as well as adult direction, rather than through a day built solely around lessons.
Activities combine children’s choices with planned teaching. Staff assess progress continually and use that understanding to decide what comes next. Bozeat aims to pitch activities slightly beyond what each child can already manage, giving them something new to attempt while responding to their individual development. Children are recognised as learning at different speeds.
In September 2023, nursery children picked up everyday routines quickly, showed curiosity and sustained unusually strong concentration. A local church visit illustrated their readiness to handle unfamiliar experiences. Across early years, staff had identified the knowledge children needed next and provided opportunities to rehearse it during play. The practical benefit is a connection between what adults teach and what children explore for themselves.
Parents contribute to the learning picture. During the Foundation Stage, families and teachers exchange information about progress both at home and in school. An end-of-year written report records achievements and the next learning steps, giving parents a basis for understanding how their child is developing.
Additional needs sit within the school’s support structure. The Special Education Needs Coordinator (SENDCO) coordinates provision, with oversight from the senior leadership team. Support responds to age and individual need, including difficulties with communication, learning, sensory needs or physical needs. This makes the child’s circumstances, rather than a single standard intervention, the starting point.
At the September 2023 inspection, some SEND plans across the school had targets that were too imprecise, and staff did not always spot or address gaps in pupils’ knowledge promptly. Families seeking additional support should discuss how targets and progress will be checked.
Clear Learning Journeys are reviewed each term, and parents are invited to meetings to discuss progress and update plans. Children with complex needs and an Education, Health and Care Plan also have an annual review. Relevant staff have paediatric first aid training. For welfare concerns, families can speak to the Designated Safeguarding Lead or a deputy through the school.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route by the applicable deadline. Treat choosing Little Owls and securing a school place as separate decisions: familiarity with the school does not remove the need to apply again.
The school is on Harrold Road, Bozeat, Wellingborough, NN29 7LP. Nursery enquiries can go to the school office on 01933 663840 or bps-admin@bozeat-school.net. Families can also contact the school to arrange a visit, providing an opportunity to discuss whether Little Owls suits their child.
