Listening to everyday sounds, making purposeful constructions and practising movement give Olympic Primary's nursery its practical character. This is school-attached provision in Wellingborough, with early learning built around activities children can hear, handle and try for themselves.
Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Good at the inspection of 24 and 25 January 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Speaking and listening come first in nursery phonics. Phase 1 draws children's attention to surrounding sounds and introduces oral blending and segmenting: hearing how sounds join together and how words can be separated into sounds. Progression to Phase 2 depends on teacher assessment. The emphasis is on readiness rather than simply moving everyone forward together.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) activities combine children's own choices with tasks guided by adults. In design and technology, children explore materials, build towards an intended purpose and learn to handle simple tools safely. They can change the resources they use as their work develops. These are practical opportunities to make decisions and test ideas, rather than just produce a finished object.
Food preparation also forms part of this early-years learning, with hygiene included alongside cooking. Movement has a named approach too: the school aims to use the Lancashire PE EYFS scheme of work alongside its outdoor Fundamental skills area. Planned activities address coordination, movement and control, giving physical development a place alongside speaking, listening and making.
Food allergies deserve an early conversation with the catering team. Across the school, Aspens can cater for intolerances, allergies and dietary requirements linked to religious beliefs. Parents are asked to discuss their child's needs with the team so that meals can be prepared safely. This is a school catering arrangement, and families should treat the discussion as part of organising any school meals their child will have.
The school recognises that some sensitive safeguarding topics may need adapting to individual children's needs and teaching at an age-appropriate level. Teaching may take place in smaller groups or individually where appropriate, allowing the approach to change with the child rather than relying on one format for everyone.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the normal deadline. Keep that application separate from the decision to join nursery: choosing this early-years provision should be a decision about the nursery experience itself.
Nursery applications go directly to the school office, with email also accepted. Families can book a tour led by a member of the senior leadership team, providing an opportunity to see the early-years setting and discuss joining.
For nursery enquiries or a tour booking, telephone 01933 677300 or email school@olympicprimaryacademy.net. The school office opens from 8am to 4pm; those are office hours, rather than nursery session times.
