Play, conversation and the freedom to try ideas give Ruskin’s early years provision its character. The Foundation Stage starts from age two, and Ruskin Infant School has nursery provision for two-year-olds in Wellingborough. This is a school nursery, with learning organised around children’s developing language, movement and relationships.
At the Ofsted inspection on 5 and 6 December 2023, early years provision was graded Good. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery. Children had frequent opportunities to practise speaking and listening, alongside activities that developed their understanding of numbers.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) gives play a clear purpose here. Communication, physical skills and emotional and social development form its starting points. Literacy, maths, creative expression and exploration of the wider world extend that foundation. Children have scope to choose and investigate, with activities designed to encourage persistence and the development of their own ideas.
Practical making combines children’s choices with adult guidance. Early years activities include planning constructions, selecting materials and learning to handle simple tools safely. Children can change their work as an idea develops. Cooking and food preparation also introduce hygiene routines, connecting practical skills with everyday care.
Movement has a named approach and a physical space: the school aims to use the Lancashire PE EYFS scheme of work alongside its outdoor Fundamental skills area. Adult-guided sessions and activities initiated by children support coordination and control. The emphasis includes understanding exercise and making healthy food choices.
Nursery phonics begins with Phase 1, concentrating on listening and speech. Children tune into surrounding sounds and develop the ability to combine spoken sounds or separate words into sounds. This gives early reading work a foundation in what children can hear and say.
In December 2023, early years staff supported letter formation and helped children put their thoughts into sentences. Number activities gave children practice with the concepts they were learning. These are concrete foundations for communicating ideas and understanding quantity.
Development Matters descriptors guide the tracking of children’s development throughout the Foundation Stage. Each child has a development record that is shared with parents, giving families a way to follow progress across the different areas of learning.
School catering includes Aspens provision for allergies, intolerances and religious dietary requirements. Parents are asked to discuss their child’s needs with the catering team so that meal arrangements account for those requirements.
Attending Ruskin’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application, including those whose child already attends the nursery.
Applications go through the local authority, either online or using a School Admissions Common Application Form (CAF). The application window runs from 1 September to 15 January for children starting school in the September following their fourth birthday. Nursery attendance and the Reception application therefore need to be treated as separate decisions: choosing nursery does not replace applying for school.
