Large spaces for exploration and cosy corners for quieter moments give Wellesley Park Explorers its character. This is Wellesley Park Primary School’s own nursery, caring for children from 9 months until Reception age, with dedicated rooms and outdoor space inside the school grounds. Children have space to be active and somewhere to retreat.
Confidence is a clear nursery aim: children are encouraged to try things and take part in their own learning. In April 2026, Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision to be Strong standard. That judgement covers early years across Nursery and Reception, rather than a separate nursery inspection.
Play provides the starting point for learning. Explorers follows the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum for ages 0–5, bringing together communication, physical development, relationships, literacy, mathematics, creativity and understanding the world. In parent terms, learning to talk, manage feelings and use the body sits alongside early reading, writing and number work. Reading, writing and maths activities are adapted to children’s needs.
Stories, imaginative play and circle time give children ways to explore emotions. This makes learning about feelings part of everyday activity, rather than a separate conversation only when something goes wrong. Dedicated indoor rooms and outdoor space allow learning to take place in both settings.
The April 2026 early years findings give concrete examples of that learning: children build, paint, write and tell stories, developing control with pencils and paintbrushes. A veterinary role-play area connects play with an animal theme. Adults develop children’s vocabulary through conversation and questions, so play becomes an opportunity to explain ideas as well as act them out. Opportunities indoors and outside develop both small hand movements and larger physical skills.
Each child has a key worker, providing individual support with learning, relationships, emotions and physical development. This person is also the family’s nursery contact. That gives parents a clear starting point for conversations about their child, while practitioners work with families to build relationships.
In April 2026, early years staff assessed emotional and learning needs promptly and adapted teaching when children needed additional help. Established routines helped children settle, choose activities independently and maintain their attention. Self-care and choices during play also gave them practice in doing things for themselves. These are useful foundations for nursery life: support responds to the child, and independence develops through ordinary daily routines.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place at Wellesley Park Primary School. Parents must make a separate Reception application through the normal school admissions process. Applications go through Somerset Council and are considered under Somerset’s coordinated primary admissions arrangements. Treat this as a separate family task, even when your child already knows the setting.
Learning is sequenced across Nursery and Reception, providing continuity in the curriculum. This connection concerns what children learn; the requirement to apply separately still stands.
Explorers opens Monday to Friday, 7:30am to 6:00pm, all year round. Families can choose term-time-only or year-round care, with flexible sessions. The distinction matters for families arranging care during school holidays as well as during term.
Universal funding provides 15 hours from the term after a child’s third birthday. For extended 30-hour funding, families must apply and receive their 11-digit code in the preceding term. Confirm current charges with the school before committing to a booking.
