Learning about personal safety begins in the early years at St Matthew's: children receive guidance about secrets that are safe to keep and those they should share, alongside protecting themselves and other people. That gives the provision a concrete starting point for parents interested in how care and learning connect.
The nursery belongs to St Matthew's CofE Primary School in Yiewsley, West Drayton. It sits within a Church of England primary school. At the inspection on 6 and 7 July 2022, Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Good. This is an early years judgement within the school inspection, rather than a separate nursery rating.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the framework for early education, covering learning, development, health and safety. Its learning areas bring together language and communication, movement, relationships and emotions with early literacy, mathematics, creative expression and exploring the world. For parents, this means early education encompasses much more than preparing to read and count.
Personal safety has a specific place in the early years here. At the July 2022 inspection, the school's consent curriculum included guidance for its youngest children about secrets and avoiding harm. These are practical ideas children can use when deciding whether to tell an adult about something that worries them.
For a child needing additional help, the school's support process involves both the family and the teaching team. Parents can raise concerns with their child's teacher or the special educational needs coordinator (SENDCo). The Inclusion Team investigates concerns alongside the teacher and phase leader, with parents involved in the discussion. That creates a route from a parent's observation to planning support.
Additional help follows the Assess, Plan, Do, Review cycle. Individual Learning Plans record progress, and their targets and provision are reconsidered each term. Where suitable, support can include equipment such as adapted scissors or pencil grips. These adjustments address the practical tasks a child finds difficult.
Medical needs have a separate planning process. A Care Plan is developed with parents and the school nurse, then discussed with staff working with the child. Administration of medicine requires a signed Care Plan and parental agreement. Families can also arrange meetings with the teacher or Inclusion Team; a communication diary may be used where needed to exchange messages between home and school.
Attending this nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process by the applicable deadline. Treat choosing a nursery and securing a school place as separate decisions.
The school is on High Street, Yiewsley, West Drayton, UB7 7QJ. Contact the school office on 01895 442724 or email stmatthews@fraysacademytrust.org for enquiries.
For families considering physical access, the school has low thresholds in its lower classrooms and a disabled parking bay. Individual access requirements can be discussed with the school, allowing families to explain the adjustments their child needs.
