Nursery at Becket Primary School
Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.
Stories, rhyme and conversation give Becket’s nursery its clearest character. Developing children’s language is an explicit aim, with adults modelling speech and encouraging children to explain their ideas and feelings. For a child beginning to find their voice, that puts talking alongside play rather than treating it as a separate lesson.
The nursery occupies Becket Primary School’s site in Worle, Weston-super-Mare. Its Early Years unit opened in September 2015, and the provision serves children aged two, three and four. Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 14 and 15 May 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Choice and adult guidance both shape learning. In the early years, continuous provision means children can select resources and pursue their own ideas. Some materials allow open-ended exploration; others give an activity more structure. Adults also introduce particular challenges and lead tasks, so the day combines independent play with focused teaching.
Language work has concrete ingredients: songs, stories and rhymes, plus opportunities to talk with others. Preschool children practise distinguishing sounds, hearing rhythm, recognising words that begin alike and joining or separating sounds aloud. These are listening and speaking foundations for later reading. The emphasis is on hearing how language works.
Practitioners regularly observe children to adjust activities to their development and provide challenge. In May 2024, nursery language teaching was effective, and children counted with confidence, recognising and using numbers. Across early years, children showed an appetite for learning, paid attention and followed familiar routines. Those findings give substance to the nursery’s emphasis on talk and play.
The wider school grounds include playgrounds, playing fields and a forest school area. Becket describes outdoor learning as part of its ethos, with nature-based experiences intended to encourage curiosity and problem solving. These are features of the school site, rather than a promise of a particular nursery outdoor timetable.
Relationships with parents and children are a stated nursery priority. Becket aims to involve families in nursery life and recognises parents’ role in their child’s learning. Regular observation provides a way for practitioners to respond to individual development rather than give every child the same challenge.
Lunch is a family responsibility: parents send a packed lunch. For children attending the nursery’s all-day session, a lunch charge also applies, so bringing food does not remove that additional charge.
Families with SEND concerns can contact the school office to speak to the SEND coordinator. The school also has an inclusion team and pastoral roles covering family support and learning mentoring. These provide routes for discussing needs or worries. Staff receive safeguarding training regularly, and the Head of School holds the designated safeguarding lead role.
A nursery place does not guarantee a place in Becket’s Reception class. Families must make a separate school application through North Somerset Council’s school admissions route. Treat this as another application, rather than an automatic continuation of nursery attendance, and submit it by the normal Reception deadline.
Becket Nursery runs during term time for 38 weeks each year, following the school’s term dates. Preschool has two 15-hour patterns: Monday and Tuesday from 8:30am to 2:30pm, then Wednesday from 8:30am to 11:30am; or Wednesday from 12:15pm to 3:15pm, then Thursday and Friday from 8:30am to 2:30pm. The 30-hour pattern runs from 8:30am to 2:30pm on weekdays.
For nursery-age children, weekday mornings run from 8:30am to 11:30am and afternoons from 12:15pm to 3:15pm. An all-day session spans 8:30am to 3:15pm. Preschool attendance can be extended until 3:15pm for an additional charge. Ask the school for current charges.
Discuss suitable sessions with the nursery through the school office on 01934 516052 or admin@becket.n-somerset.sch.uk. Visits can also be arranged through the office. The fixed preschool patterns make the choice practical: compare the days and collection times with your family’s weekly commitments.
