Feeling secure comes before becoming independent at Little Mixers, Oldmixon Primary School’s nursery. Children can join from age 2, and the provision operates under the school’s registration on Monkton Avenue in Weston-super-Mare. It is part of the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately registered nursery.
In January 2026, Ofsted judged early years to be Strong standard. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than giving the nursery a separate grade. Provision for children aged 2 and 3 was closely adapted to their developmental needs.
Language, movement and relationships give learning its shape here. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines children’s development and care with learning through play. Its seven areas bring together language, emotional and physical development with early mathematics, literacy, creative expression and exploration of the world. For parents, that means learning extends beyond preparation for reading and writing.
ELAN curriculum maps distinguish learning for two-year-olds from preschool learning, while personal and emotional development and fine motor learning span ages 2 to 4. This gives the youngest children their own starting point, alongside skills that continue to develop as they grow.
In January 2026, conversations between adults and children helped vocabulary grow. Carefully selected activities strengthened finger movements, laying groundwork for later handwriting. Predictable routines supported behaviour, while children began practising cooperation and talking about feelings. These are practical foundations for joining in, communicating needs and managing relationships.
A Key Worker begins the relationship with an initial meeting involving the child and parent. Development, interests, worries and home life are discussed together, giving staff a picture of the child before longer separations begin.
Settling happens in short sessions that parents or carers may attend. Time apart starts once the family and nursery agree that the child feels secure. The emphasis is on building trust with a familiar adult, with short periods alone following that relationship.
Early years support responds promptly to additional needs. In January 2026, barriers to learning were recognised quickly, with parents and outside professionals involved when needed. Families can also raise concerns with their child’s teacher. The school’s SEND support uses an assess, plan, do, review cycle, so help can be reconsidered as needs change.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority. For North Somerset residents, that route is North Somerset Council; for the September 2026 intake, the deadline was 23:59 on 15 January 2026.
Priority is conditional. For 2026–27, children attending Oldmixon’s preschool at application time qualified under the third oversubscription criterion only if eligible for early years pupil premium or service premium. A supplementary information form was also required. Attendance alone did not confer that priority.
Transition support is separate from allocation. For children with identified additional needs, nursery Key Workers, parents, relevant professionals, the SENDCo and the Reception teacher meet before entry to discuss strengths and support needs.
Morning registration runs from 8:30am to 9:15am, with collection at 11:30am. Afternoon registration is between 12:15pm and 12:45pm, and collection is at 3:15pm. Those registration windows matter when organising the family’s day.
