Independence gives Crossley Street’s Pre-School its character. In May 2024, Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Outstanding, describing children who persevered, managed their behaviour and stayed absorbed in activities. This judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
The provision belongs to Crossley Street Primary School in Wetherby. Children can join in the term following their third birthday, subject to space, with September, January and April intakes. Each session accommodates up to 26 children. For families, that means a defined session capacity rather than the whole school’s roll.
Two three-hour sessions shape the day: a morning from 9am to noon and an afternoon from noon to 3pm. Lunch falls within the afternoon session, with a choice of a packed lunch or hot food. That distinction matters when choosing which part of the day suits your child.
The early years foundation stage (EYFS) combines learning with developing independence and managing feelings and behaviour. In May 2024, children showed sustained attention and developed independence and resilience through a carefully planned curriculum and established routines. Reading begins in early years, giving books a place in learning from the outset.
The school’s curriculum also identifies Initiative and Diversity as drivers. Its outdoor-learning ambitions include using the school grounds and natural surroundings, connecting learning with experiences beyond indoor activities.
Secure routines were a strength of early years in May 2024. Children developed the ability to regulate their behaviour and persisted with learning, useful foundations for taking part in a group and handling everyday challenges.
An assistant head leads EYFS, and the school team includes a nursery nurse. For additional needs, the school’s SEND coordinator oversees provision across the school. Parents can raise initial concerns with their child’s class teacher and contact the coordinator through the office to discuss support services. This gives families a clear route for starting a conversation about their child’s needs.
North Yorkshire Catering supplies school meals. The afternoon Pre-School session includes lunch, so families choosing that session can plan around either hot food or a packed meal.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process; the school directs parents to Leeds City Council for that application. Choosing nursery sessions and applying for a school place are separate decisions, so families should keep the Reception application on their planning list.
Pre-School operates during term time. The school describes 15 funded hours for children, with 30 hours possible for eligible families who provide their eligibility code before their child starts. Additional sessions can be purchased; contact the school for current charges.
To enquire about a nursery place, complete the Pre-School form linked from the admissions page. The school then contacts families to discuss their enquiry. This is the nursery-specific route, distinct from the council’s Reception application process.
Calendar planning. School closures for staff training in the 2026/27 calendar include 23 October 2026, 4 January 2027, 28 May 2027 and 7 June 2027. Factor these dates into childcare arrangements alongside the term-time session pattern.
Children are admitted in the term after their third birthday, provided a space is available. Intakes are in September, January and April.
