Nursery at Bransty Primary School

Making things and talking through ideas give Bransty’s early years provision its character. Children choose art resources, experiment with construction materials and learn words for the world around them. This is the school’s own nursery on Mona Road in Whitehaven, led and managed by the school, with provision for three-year-olds.
The school’s overview gives a nursery roll of 13 children, a headcount rather than a capacity figure. Ofsted graded the early years provision Good at the inspection on 11 and 12 October 2023. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Spoken language has a clear place in the learning. In October 2023, early years teaching emphasised children’s speech, with activities and adult interaction adjusted promptly to their developmental needs. For parents, the useful distinction is that conversation supports learning alongside practical tasks.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) takes concrete form through making, exploring and discussing. Art opportunities are daily: children develop their own ideas, choose materials and learn to handle tools safely. There is room for individual decisions. Construction adds another dimension, with adults teaching ways to connect materials and helping children consider what to do when a design presents a problem. Children also reflect with staff on how their finished work came together.
Learning about place begins close to home. Children notice natural and human features nearby, learn the vocabulary to describe them and start representing them on maps. History starts with their own lives and families, alongside pictures of familiar situations from the past. These give young children recognisable starting points for understanding place and time.
Nursery teaching sits within the Foundation Stage team. Across the school, SEND support includes action to address barriers to learning and cooperation with outside agencies and families. Parents’ contributions form part of that approach, giving families a role in explaining their child’s needs.
ClassDojo’s School Story and Class Story carry updates about school and class activity. For a conversation, teaching staff can be contacted before or after school; longer discussions can be arranged by appointment through the office. This gives parents both routine updates and a route for raising concerns directly. Paper copies of website information can also be requested from the office.
A separate application matters. Attending Bransty’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply again through the normal Reception admissions process, with Cumberland Council responsible for admissions.
For the September 2025 intake, Bransty’s admissions guidance gave an application window from September to 15 January. That is a past admissions cycle. Nursery attendance and the later school application should therefore be treated as separate decisions, with the normal deadline for the child’s intake observed.
Bransty’s admissions guidance describes flexible nursery options and up to 15 or 30 funded hours from the term after a child’s third birthday. Confirm the applicable entitlement with the school. The application instructions involve an acknowledgement letter followed by a form returned to school with an eligibility code.
