Early communication and carefully planned outdoor learning give the nursery at St Bridget's CofE School its character. Based on Main Street in Parton, it forms part of the school's early years provision. The emphasis is on helping children express themselves, grow in confidence and become more independent.
Ofsted's report dated 12 May 2026 awarded the school's early years provision Strong standard. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery. Positive relationships with adults and teaching shaped around individual children's next steps are central strengths.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum gives staff a clear sequence of learning, with communication receiving particular attention. Adults explain unfamiliar ideas and organise activities that let children try out what they have learned. This makes the interaction between adult and child an important part of the day, rather than leaving learning solely to the activity itself.
Outdoor learning requires deliberate organisation: the classroom has no direct outdoor access. Careful planning nevertheless supports outdoor experiences of a high standard. For families, the useful distinction is between the physical layout and the learning it enables. Outdoors remains part of the early years curriculum despite that access constraint.
Children become deeply involved in activities and maintain their attention for extended periods. Staff use their knowledge of each child's learning to decide what to teach next; children who arrive with gaps in their skills also progress quickly. The nursery's Nursery Knowledge and Skills Progression document gives parents a named reference for this learning pathway.
Relationships provide a secure starting point. Early years adults establish reassuring connections as children join, helping them feel comfortable from the beginning. Children's everyday welfare is attended to consistently, alongside their learning.
Support is responsive to the individual. Staff recognise emerging needs promptly, adjust activities and introduce tailored help where necessary. Work with families and specialists helps match that support to the child. For a parent whose child needs additional help, this links classroom adjustments with knowledge from home and professional advice.
The EYFS resources include Tapestry for Parents, a guide to the online learning journal. There are also school documents covering food and intimate care, including toileting procedures, which give families practical reference points for care questions.
Attending this nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Cumberland Council, including when their child already attends the nursery. The council manages Reception admissions, and oversubscription is handled under its admission policy. Treat the nursery choice and the later Reception application as two separate decisions.
The school office is the enquiry route: telephone 01946 592940 or email wh@stbridgets-par.cumbria.sch.uk. Its address is Main Street, Parton, Whitehaven, CA28 6NY. For SEND enquiries, the school provides a separate contact at rw@stbridgets-par.cumbria.sch.uk, directing families to the special educational needs coordinator.
Parents can obtain paper copies of policies from the office. Alongside the EYFS curriculum resources, these provide a practical way to read about the school's arrangements before making decisions about nursery attendance.
