Nursery at Langley First School

Caterpillar and Butterfly give Langley’s nursery its defining rhythm: two classes, each attending on three fixed days. This is provision built around a consistent attendance pattern, so the first practical question for families is whether those days fit their week.
The nursery belongs to Langley First School on Drumoyne Gardens in West Monkseaton, Whitley Bay. Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good following its inspection on 14 and 15 June 2022; that judgement covers early years within the school.
Play provides the starting point for learning. Langley’s early years curriculum uses practical experiences and children’s interest in play to develop their learning, rather than treating play as a break from it. For parents, the emphasis is on children learning through what they do.
The June 2022 inspection found clear learning goals and a stronger connection between those goals and activities directed by adults than in some activities chosen by children. That distinction matters: children’s own choices need the same sense of purpose as work guided by staff.
Indoor and outdoor spaces both supported purposeful learning at that time. Staff also developed children’s vocabulary effectively, giving conversation an educational role alongside activity. The school’s curriculum page links to Nursery Spring and Autumn 1 overviews, providing parents with a way to follow the focus of learning.
Communication connects the nursery day with home. In June 2022, early years teachers kept families informed through updates each week about children’s learning. Those updates give parents something concrete to discuss with their child.
Going for Gold takes a nursery-specific form: children move their names towards a pot of gold along a rainbow. This makes the school’s behaviour expectations visible in a form adapted for younger children.
For additional needs, the school provides a SEN Information Report explaining its support for children with special educational needs and disabilities. Families can use this to understand the school’s approach. School lunches are prepared on site each day, placing food preparation within the school rather than elsewhere.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal local authority route and meet the normal application deadline.
Langley manages nursery applications itself, while Reception applications follow the local authority admissions policy and can be made online. Keep those two processes separate in your planning: accepting a nursery offer is one decision; applying for Reception is another.
Caterpillar attends Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday; Butterfly attends Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Both run from 8:55am to 3:15pm. The attendance patterns are fixed, so families need arrangements that work around the relevant three-day block.
To request a nursery application, contact the school office and give your preferred pattern. Application and offer deadlines appear on the application form. An offered place must be accepted by its stated deadline or it can be offered to another child.
