At a Glance

Learning through practical problems gives Burton Green’s early years its character: a sticky batch of play dough becomes something to investigate and put right. Nursery provision includes two-year-olds within Burton Green Primary School in Clifton, York. It is a school-based start, with the youngest children forming part of the school’s provision.

The Nursery Day

In March 2025, the early years curriculum connected hands-on exploration with foundations for later learning. Children took computers apart and worked out how to correct a play dough recipe. These examples give parents a concrete picture of learning through investigation: children encounter a problem, explore what has happened and consider a solution.

Mathematics also has a practical form. Sorting objects by colour and size lets children use mathematical ideas with things they can handle and compare. Balls and hoops bring a different challenge. Children persisted with throwing activities and maintained their attention, giving physical play a role in practising concentration as well as movement.

The early years learning environment was organised to help children engage and build knowledge. Familiar routines supported the day, while children played together cooperatively. Adult conversation mattered too: staff used purposeful exchanges to extend vocabulary and language. For a parent, the significant combination is activity, talk and repetition, with learning happening through both materials and relationships.

Care and Support

In March 2025, children in early years followed established routines and behaved exceptionally well. Their cooperative play gives a useful picture of the social side of the day: learning involves other children as well as adults.

Heartwood Learning Trust’s safeguarding approach includes an Internal Team Around the Student model. The trust aims to involve families in decisions about support and to act when a concern first emerges. Its approach brings together recognition of concerns, assessment of needs and planning for help. For families, that makes participation in support decisions an explicit aim, rather than treating parents simply as recipients of information. The trust safeguarding team can be contacted at safeguarding.team@hlt.academy.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the applicable deadline. Choosing the nursery and securing a school place are separate decisions.

Early writing. In March 2025, inconsistent correction of letter formation slowed some younger pupils’ progress towards fluent writing. Further work on early writing was required, making this a relevant consideration alongside the practical learning activities.
