Founded as the Roman fortress of Eboracum in AD 71 at the confluence of the rivers Ouse and Foss in North Yorkshire, York grew into the capital of Britannia Inferior and later the ecclesiastical heart of northern England, its medieval minster and intact city walls forming one of the country's most complete historic urban cores. South Bank and Clifton extend the residential arc inward.

Around 142,000 people live across the City of York district today, from the school-competitive belt of Bootham, long one of the most sought-after inner-city pockets for families targeting state primary places, to the rural villages of Alne and Thorpe Underwood, where oversubscribed village primaries draw households from across the wider hinterland. York railway station, on the East Coast Main Line, connects the city to Leeds in around twenty minutes and to London King's Cross in under two hours.
