Child-led play and carefully chosen adult activities give Cundall Manor’s nursery its character. Children have room to pursue an interest, then tackle something a grown-up has planned. That balance matters: it gives independence a place alongside learning to concentrate and persevere.
The nursery caters for ages 2½ to 4 within an independent school in Cundall, North Yorkshire. It belongs to the pre-preparatory department, which extends from Nursery to Year 2. In November 2024, there were three Nursery classes. The school’s 28-acre site provides the wider setting, while dedicated outdoor areas serve its youngest children.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together play, early learning and children’s development. Here, choosing an activity and joining an adult-led task both have a place. At the ISI inspection of 26 to 28 November 2024, this balance supported independent learning, sustained attention and resilience in the early years. Children could explore for themselves and also encounter challenges designed to move their learning forward.
Letters, sounds and number patterns give that play a learning purpose. In November 2024, early-years teaching helped children connect letters with their sounds, supporting emerging literacy and writing; work on numbers and patterns also produced good mathematical progress. These are foundations children can use as their learning becomes more demanding.
Making rangoli patterns introduces cultural celebrations through a practical activity. Voting for a favourite story gives children a small, understandable experience of making a collective choice. Early-years activities also include pompom making, helping develop hand control. Outdoors, areas reserved for younger children provide space for recreation and play suited to their stage.
Familiar adults matter as much as activities. The nursery team includes assistants with key practitioner roles; qualifications within the team include SVQ 3 in Social Services, Children & Young People. At the November 2024 inspection, early-years staff knew children’s interests and used that knowledge to plan their next learning steps, while close relationships helped children feel secure and ready to learn.
Lunch is included in both the morning and full-day nursery sessions. A shorter booked day therefore still includes a meal before collection. For families joining from the Menwith Hill community, the school offers a network of staff and parents to help children settle, including support in class.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Ask admissions to confirm the arrangements for moving from Nursery to Reception.
A full day runs from 08:30 to 15:20, while the morning half day finishes at 13:00 after the same start time. Charged after-school care is divided into three periods, continuing from 15:20 to 18:00. This gives families a longer collection window than the core nursery day.
Children aged 2, 3 and 4 may qualify for up to 15 funded hours each week; some may qualify for an additional 15 hours. Contact admissions@cundallmanor.org.uk about eligibility and current charges. Nursery children are excluded from the school’s sibling discount.
Personal tours, taster days and termly Stay & Play sessions for nursery-aged children offer ways to explore the provision before joining. Arrange a visit through admissions or call 01423 360 200.
