Two three-hour sessions give Fishergate’s nursery a clear part-time shape. The provision sits within the school’s Early Years Unit in York, with morning and afternoon options. Fishergate takes children from age three, so this is an introduction to school life within a primary setting.
Play, conversation and early mathematical thinking work together here. In March 2023, Ofsted found that early-years children were developing independence, with adults helping them extend their vocabulary and think through questions. The emphasis was on exploring ideas with other children, giving learning a social dimension as well as an individual one.
A construction activity made that approach concrete: children selected green blocks for a monster model, discussed their ideas and drew inspiration from a book. It brought building, listening and reference to a book into the same task. Classroom activities also developed early mathematics, while adult questions helped children explain and extend their thinking.
The Early Years playground sits within the main playground and provides the route into the unit. It gives this younger provision a distinct physical space within the wider school site.
Additional support includes small-group teaching for Early Years children. The SEND coordinator works with families and outside agencies as well as overseeing provision, giving parents a route to discuss needs beyond the classroom. Messages can be passed through the school office.
Support starts with classroom help or adapted equipment, with individual or small-group work from teaching assistants where needed. If difficulties persist, specialist advice can be sought with parental permission. Speech and Language Therapists and Educational Psychologists are among the professionals involved. This allows the next steps to respond to the child’s particular difficulties.
Communication is tailored too. Some children use a home-school book; others have a brief daily exchange between their family and teacher. Children on the SEND register at Band 2 or above have progress reviews each term with the class teacher and Inclusion leader. Families can use a parent/carer passport to share successful strategies, achievements and concerns, helping support at school take account of life at home.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Parents must make a separate application through City of York Council’s school admissions service and meet the deadline for their child’s entry year. Treat that application as a separate task from arranging a nursery place.
For changes of class, Fishergate uses a summer transition afternoon and additional classroom visits for children needing more support. Teachers and teaching assistants exchange information, including examples of children’s work. Where necessary, photographs, social stories and buddying help children prepare for change. These are support arrangements, not an admissions entitlement.
Morning nursery runs from 8:40am to 11:40am; the afternoon option is 12:15pm to 3:15pm. These are distinct sessions, so match the chosen pattern to your collection arrangements. Morning children should be present by 8:45am.
Use the Early Years playground to reach the unit, and supervise your child until the start of the school day. For enquiries about a part-time place, contact the school office on 01904 555335 or email admin@fishergateschool.com.
