Rhymes, songs and shared stories give this nursery its character. Nursery children belong to Foundation Stage 1 within Holme-upon-Spalding Moor Primary School, on High Street in the village. The school's age range starts at three.
At the inspection on 28 and 29 January 2025, Ofsted graded the school's early years provision Good. That judgement covers the early years provision within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Books and conversation shape the early learning experience. In January 2025, nursery children spent time singing and enjoying rhymes, while books across the early years encouraged children to recount stories adults had read to them. This gives language a practical purpose: listening, joining in and telling a story back.
The early years foundation stage (EYFS) includes learning through play here. Children practise counting and identify shapes during play, connecting early mathematics with what they are doing. Adults help children learn alongside one another, using encouragement and conversation to develop their participation.
Read Write Inc. is the named programme for daily phonics across EYFS. Outdoors, the Nursery Playground has received equipment and storage through Friends of Holme School (FoHS). The group has also supplied splash suits for the nursery, practical kit for outdoor activity. Past nursery visits have included the village Methodist Church for Easter and Christmas activities.
In January 2025, early years staff supported children effectively through reassuring encouragement, recognition of their efforts and purposeful talk. The emphasis was on helping children join in with play and learning together. Parents also had a regular part in the early years' reading culture: invitations to share books with their children took place each week.
Lunch comes from a canteen operated and staffed by the school. Meals are cooked on site, with local ingredients used where possible. Vegetarian diets and children's special dietary requirements are catered for; vegan, dairy-free and gluten-free menus can be requested. A packed lunch is another option.
For children choosing sandwiches, the alternatives are cheese or ham, served with the day's potato accompaniment, a drink and pudding. Parents email sandwich selections to the office by 10.30am on Mondays, allowing the kitchen to prepare the requested numbers.
The school says it values parents' understanding of their child's disability and how it affects everyday activities. For families discussing additional needs, that makes practical information about their child a useful starting point. The SEND coordinator can be contacted at hosm.send@eastriding.gov.uk.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route by the normal deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as separate decisions: participation in nursery life does not itself secure the next school place.
Nursery enquiries go to the school office on 01430 860287 or hosm@eastriding.gov.uk. Contact the school for current charges.
The school uniform includes a white polo shirt, royal-blue logo sweatshirt or cardigan, and grey or black trousers, skirt or pinafore. Plain black shoes are required. The School Wear shop on High Street supplies logo clothing, giving families a village purchasing option. Clothing should be labelled, and Foundation children's shoes need names too.
It is Foundation Stage 1, also referred to as FS1.
