At a Glance

A new story each week gives Helperbees its starting point: books shape some of the play, with children’s interests helping to shape the learning too. This is the provision for children aged two to four at St Peter's Brafferton Church of England Voluntary Aided Primary School. The governor-led preschool sits on the school site, giving nursery life its own setting within the primary school.

The inspection on 8 and 9 July 2025 judged early years provision Requires improvement. That judgement covers the school’s early years, rather than a separately graded nursery. The concerns were especially relevant to Nursery: activities did not consistently give children enough opportunities to develop language and skills suited to their development.

The Nursery Day

Play combines activities organised by adults with those children choose themselves. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the framework, with an emphasis on movement, communication and children’s social and emotional development. In parent terms, the focus is on learning to talk, interact and become more independent, alongside exploring new ideas through play.

Books have a physical home here. Helperbees has a cosy reading area for sharing stories during the day, plus a separate story session. A fresh book is introduced each week, and stories extend into activities and displays that children can use independently. This gives children opportunities to revisit familiar language beyond storytime.

Early phonics starts with listening for differences between sounds. Children move to the Nursery element of Read Write Inc when ready. Outdoor learning also includes Forest Schools: Helperbees has slots allocated by half term for weekly sessions, rather than an unqualified weekly offer throughout the year.

The planned curriculum and its delivery need separate consideration. In July 2025, the early years curriculum had an organised structure, but activities sometimes failed to extend children’s talk and skills. Staff observed learning, yet the next learning goals were sometimes too vague. Language development. These weaknesses affected Nursery especially. Families should give the quality of adult interaction during play close attention on a tour.

Care and Support

Settling can be gradual. Staff work with parents and can arrange staggered starts or sessions where parents stay and play, allowing the introduction to fit the child. A key worker carries out the two-year progress check, with a written account covering communication, physical development and social and emotional development between 24 and 36 months.

Parents can follow learning through a shared display board and selected observations in Evidence Me, the online journal. Some observations allow parents to respond, creating a link between learning at nursery and home. The school SENCo can be contacted through the office or at senco@st-peters-brafferton.n-yorks.sch.uk.

For children using BASE, breakfast includes toast, cereals, fruit and fruit juice. Children sometimes help prepare snacks through their own choice. These arrangements belong to wraparound care.

Moving On to Reception

Attending Helperbees does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through North Yorkshire Admissions within the normal application timetable. Treat the nursery decision and the Reception application as separate steps.

Familiarity is built through practical contact. Children aged three to four can visit and play in Class 1 during the year, and the two early years settings hold joint events. The Reception teacher also visits children in their existing nursery, including external settings. These activities help build relationships; they do not secure admission.

Practical Information

Helperbees runs during term time, from 9am to 3.30pm. BASE operates in the Helperbees building before and after the nursery day, from 8am to 9am and 3.30pm to 6pm. Holiday clubs also operate, with closure periods and INSET days to account for when planning childcare.

New children can join during the year, subject to space and the supervision ratios in place. To arrange a tour of Helperbees and the school, contact the office on 01423 360250 or admin@st-peters-brafferton.n-yorks.sch.uk. For current charges, contact the school.
