Woodland learning and a clear emphasis on conversation give The Mount's early years provision its character. Speaking, listening and physical activity sit alongside opportunities to learn about other people's beliefs. The focus is on children's development, with support adapted to individual needs.
At the ISI inspection of 21 to 23 April 2026, the pre-school catered for children aged 2 to 5 within this independent school on Dalton Terrace, York. It was co-educational, with one Pre-school class. For families, that means boys and girls learning together within a school setting.
Communication gives the learning programme a clear direction. Adults demonstrate language and provide extra help where children need it, rather than expecting everyone to develop at the same pace. Children build confidence in talking and listening; the April 2026 early years findings linked this approach with good progress. These are useful foundations for expressing needs, sharing ideas and taking part in learning.
Book choices receive individual attention too. Teachers help children select reading material that matches their needs while providing challenge. The practical significance is the balance: support responds to the child, and learning still asks them to move forward. Across the early years, planning is adjusted to children's individual development.
The woodland setting adds a physical dimension to the programme. Trained staff lead outdoor learning, while mini athletics contributes to physical development. Children therefore have opportunities to develop movement as well as language. Cultural learning also has a concrete form: parents from different faiths and belief backgrounds contribute to planned activities. This gives children encounters with different perspectives through people, alongside their other learning experiences.
Individual needs shape the early years provision, including targeted help with communication and language. This matters for a child who needs additional support to join in: the learning programme is adapted, rather than relying on a single approach for everyone.
Oversight extends to care as well as teaching. In April 2026, early years leaders managed children's development and safeguarding effectively, and the environment met statutory requirements. Staffing ratios were appropriate, including while children ate and drank. For parents, that brings the supervision of ordinary care routines into the picture, alongside the more visible learning activities.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Ask the Admissions Team about Reception application requirements and timing. Keep that decision separate from the nursery choice: familiarity with a school is not an entitlement to a place.
The Admissions Team handles enquiries through an online form, with direct contact also possible on 01904 232323 or admissions@mountschoolyork.co.uk. Families can request an individual visit through the Admissions Department.
Tours can take place during the year, including on a working school day. A visit offers the opportunity to meet teachers and explore the grounds. Zoom visits are another option for families arranging contact remotely. Tell the school about any specific accessibility requirements when arranging a visit.
