Movement comes before handwriting at Yearsley Grove’s nursery. Write Dance gives children opportunities to develop the physical skills they will need for writing, making movement part of learning rather than simply a break from it. Books have a clear place too.
This is the nursery within Yearsley Grove Primary School in Huntington, York. In November 2022, Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Write Dance is the nursery’s named writing approach. Its emphasis on physical development gives young children a practical starting point for the later demands of handwriting. Across early years, role-play and spoken rehearsal also support writing, with opportunities to write built into the learning areas.
The Early Years Foundation Stage brings learning into activities and classroom routines. In November 2022, children in early years took part in planned activities with a clear purpose, followed instructions attentively and understood the routines around them. Books were readily accessible and used to encourage reading. For parents, that describes a day with both activity and structure.
Little Wandle is used for phonics across the school’s Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1. Activities include practical materials, games and flashcards to help children recognise sounds in words. The school also encourages families to share reading at least three times a week, giving books a place beyond the classroom.
The wider school grounds contain an allotment, a Forest School area and two playgrounds. Inside, the library has sofas and cushions for reading. These are school facilities; they should be understood separately from the nursery’s own daily activities.
Attentive adult support was an early years strength in November 2022: staff responded to children’s needs and helped them with their activities. That matters alongside the established routines, giving children both a predictable structure and help as they learn.
Fruit is provided free at playtime for children in EYFS. School lunch choices include a packed lunch or a purchased hot meal, with vegetarian dishes and jacket potatoes among the options. The school runs its own kitchen and uses produce from its allotment. Families with dietary requirements can discuss them with the office.
For prescribed medicine, parents complete an administration form and take both the medicine and the form to the office. This gives families a concrete route for arranging medication during the day.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. The route for primary school enrolment is City of York Council, so nursery registration and the later school application need to be treated as separate decisions.
Nursery hours run from 9am to 3pm. Registration offers a choice between 15 and 30 hours, allowing families to express the attendance pattern they want when applying.
Parents can complete the nursery registration form or speak with the Early Years staff in school. For joining enquiries, contact the reception team on 01904 554490. School visits can be arranged by calling the office for an appointment. For current charges, contact the school.
