Gawber Preschool

At a Glance

Chalk lines on an outdoor path and balancing planks give Gawber Preschool's May 2022 nursery day a practical, hands-on character. Children compared lengths, named colours and practised moving confidently. Small experiences carried useful learning.

At its 26 May 2022 inspection, Ofsted rated Gawber Preschool Good and judged safeguarding effective. Based at St. Thomas Parish Hall in Gawber, Barnsley, the setting has capacity for 44 children; those attending in May 2022 were aged two to four.

The Nursery Experience

The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning, care and development: the day brings these together through play, conversation and practical tasks.

In May 2022, children could choose resources themselves, giving them opportunities to decide what to do. Activities encouraged friendships and playing together. Outdoors, children steered bicycles around obstacles and balanced on wooden planks supported by blocks. These offered different ways to practise coordination.

The May 2022 activities also connected physical actions with language. Drawing chalk lines on the outside path gave children something concrete to compare: they talked about length and identified colours. Cutting paper shapes with scissors involved handling a tool carefully. These were opportunities to practise control and describe what they were doing, rather than treating language and movement as separate parts of the day.

Social learning was visible in everyday behaviour in May 2022. Children shared, waited for turns and used polite manners. Alongside activities planned to help friendships develop, those habits gave children practice in playing with others. Choosing accessible equipment also put decisions in their hands. For a parent weighing the preschool experience, this combination matters: children had opportunities both to pursue their own choices and to take account of other children.

There were weaknesses too. In May 2022, nearby groups doing stories and letters and sounds overlapped, creating noise that prevented some children from concentrating. Some practitioners relied on questions answered with yes or no, leaving too little room for children to explain their thinking.

Care and Support

In May 2022, staff adjusted their help during balancing activities to children's confidence, offering a hand until children could manage independently. Everyday hygiene also involved taking responsibility: children washed their hands and used mirrors to check their noses after wiping them.

Parents received updates in May 2022 about children's development and next steps, alongside ideas for activities at home. That gave families practical ways to continue the learning between sessions. Staff also had supervision covering their wellbeing and work performance.

The May 2022 hygiene examples went beyond following an adult's instruction. Children explained that washing removed germs which could make them ill, dried their hands and disposed of used tissues carefully. Mirrors let them check the result of wiping their noses for themselves. The practical value was growing responsibility for small personal-care tasks, alongside an understanding of why those tasks mattered.

In May 2022, the manager monitored practitioners' work and identified training to support their teaching. Regular supervision provided separate opportunities to discuss staff wellbeing and performance. These arrangements sat alongside the teaching weaknesses identified that May: monitoring practice did not mean every interaction offered enough challenge. For families, the useful distinction is between having a process for supporting staff and how effectively individual practitioners extend children's thinking during an activity.

Practical Information

The address is St. Thomas Parish Hall, Church Street, Gawber, Barnsley, S75 2RJ.

In May 2022, opening hours were 7.30am to 5.45pm on weekdays during term time. Session windows were 7.30am to 8.30am, 8.50am to 11.50am, 11.50am to 12.30pm and 3.30pm to 5.45pm; children could also attend a full day. Funded early education was offered then for children aged two, three and four.

Things to Consider

  • Group-time noise. In May 2022, overlapping activities made concentration difficult for some children. On a visit, ask how stories and letters and sounds are now organised.
  • Teaching challenge. The May 2022 improvement priorities included developing staff teaching. Ask how practitioners encourage children to reason and give fuller answers.
  • Term-time planning. The May 2022 timetable combined shorter sessions with full-day attendance during term time. Ask which current attendance pattern would fit your family's week.

The Verdict

Gawber Preschool suits families who value practical play and opportunities for children to become more independent. Its May 2022 arrangements served both shorter-session and full-day families, with term-time attendance the important planning factor. The balance of that inspection was positive, but concentration during group activities and the depth of staff questioning deserve attention when choosing it.
