St George's Nursery, Narborough

At a Glance

Independence here has a practical shape: pouring a drink, serving lunch and working out how a construction compares with your own height. In August 2022, those everyday experiences formed part of life at St George's Nursery, Narborough, giving children opportunities to practise skills rather than simply watch adults do things for them.

At its 5 August 2022 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good and judged safeguarding effective. That positive assessment came with an important improvement priority: younger children needed more consistent conversation and meaningful interaction with staff.

The nursery accepts children from 2 months to 60 months. Full-day, morning and afternoon bookings provide different ways to organise attendance.

The Nursery Experience

Learning and Activities

The early years foundation stage sets the framework for children's learning, development and care, bringing communication, physical skills and relationships into everyday play. In August 2022, resources supported its different areas of learning, with practical activities connecting language, counting and cooperation.

Preschool children joined small construction pieces into a long shape, then compared its length with their bodies and counted with staff. Toddlers shared pretend food in the play kitchen. These examples show how an ordinary game could become an opportunity to exchange ideas or explore measurement, rather than a separate formal lesson.

During August 2022, older children's lunchtime conversations included unfamiliar food and new words, while toddlers used animal vocabulary introduced through a story in their subsequent play. The contrast with the youngest children matters: some younger children spent extended periods playing near staff without enough verbal engagement. Adult presence and adult interaction were not consistently the same thing.

Practical learning in August 2022 also included preschool children wearing protective goggles and using a hammer to knock nails into foam, following staff instructions. This gave them a concrete task involving tools and listening. Before outdoor play, older children discussed why they needed sunhats and sun cream, while younger children found their own hats. These examples connected safety to something children could do or explain themselves, rather than leaving it entirely to adults.

Outdoor and Community Life

An outdoor garden gives children another space for play and exploration. It adds a physical alternative to indoor activities, rather than making the whole day depend on the rooms inside.

A summer fête in 2024 brought games, crafts and face painting to the Narborough grounds and raised money for PANDAS charity. This was a dated family event, rather than a weekly activity, but it gives a concrete example of families taking part in nursery life beyond their child's usual attendance.

Care and Support

Familiar adults mattered in August 2022: children had close relationships with their key people and moved confidently between their daily routines. For a parent thinking about separation, that relationship is more useful to understand than a broad promise of warm care.

Mealtimes also offered opportunities to practise doing things independently during August 2022. Babies tried feeding themselves with cutlery, toddlers handled jugs, and preschool children served food and ate with knives and forks. The progression was practical, with different expectations for different stages of development.

Emotional support had similarly concrete examples in August 2022. Staff helped older children talk through disappointment when friends wanted different games, while younger children heard words for feelings and babies explored facial expressions using a mirror. This linked emotional language to situations children were actually experiencing.

A special educational needs coordinator took part in the August 2022 visit and discussed support for children with additional needs. For families needing individual support, the role provides a useful starting point for discussing how their child's routines and learning would be planned.

Sessions and Attendance

The address is Drury House, 50 Leicester Road, Narborough, Leicester, LE19 2DF. Opening hours run from 7.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, across the year, with closures for bank holidays and Christmas.

Full Day bookings run from 8am to 6pm. Morning sessions are 8am to 1pm, and Afternoon sessions run from 1pm to 6pm. These booking times matter separately from the earlier opening time: the morning opening window should not be treated as part of the Full Day session.

Branch enquiries can be sent to narborough@stgeorgesnursery.com.

Funding and Paid Extras

Both 15 and 30 funded hours are offered on a stretched basis across 52 weeks, spreading the entitlement across the year rather than concentrating it into term time. Paid, non-funded sessions are also offered.

Meals during funded hours carry a separate charge, as does the Essentials category of consumables. Families should budget for these alongside any privately paid attendance; funded childcare and its additional charges are separate parts of the arrangement.

A one-off registration charge and a deposit apply, with the deposit refunded when the child leaves, subject to terms and conditions. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation.

Things to Consider

  • Conversation with the youngest children. The August 2022 improvement priority concerned sustained, meaningful interaction. During a visit, ask how practitioners now keep conversation going during babies' and younger children's play.
  • Early opening and booked sessions. The nursery opens at 7.30am, while Full Day and Morning bookings begin at 8am. Discuss how an earlier start would fit your intended attendance.
  • Funded-hour extras. Meals and Essentials are charged separately during funded hours. Request a written breakdown for your chosen sessions, including what Essentials covers and the arrangements for providing items yourself.

The Verdict

St George's Nursery, Narborough suits families comparing full-day attendance with morning or afternoon sessions, including those planning to spread funded hours across the year. Its August 2022 picture of practical independence and familiar key people gives substance to the Good judgement. For parents of the youngest children, the decisive question is how consistently staff now turn nearby supervision into active conversation.
