Hartford Old School House Day Nursery

At a Glance

A converted Victorian school house with space to grow vegetables gives Hartford Old School House Day Nursery a clear character. Indoor play sits alongside an outdoor area with a separate growing border and greenhouse, bringing planting into children's nursery experience. This is a practical attraction for families who want children to spend time exploring living things as well as playing indoors.

At its August 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good overall. The strongest detail beneath that judgement was children's willingness to persist: difficult puzzles held their attention, while staff joined their play and introduced counting through dinosaur toys. There were also improvements to make in the precision of teaching and the organisation of larger group activities.

The nursery cares for children from 3 to 60 months at 73 School Lane, Hartford, Northwich, CW8 1PF. Full days sit alongside morning and afternoon bookings, although the shorter sessions are restricted to funded children taking them as a top-up.

The Nursery Experience

Rooms and Ages

Baby Bears accommodates children aged 3 to 14 months, with an emphasis on play and enjoyment.

Tiny Tigers, for 12 to 24 months, emphasises messy and creative play; Busy Bees, for 20 to 30 months, emphasises growing confidence. Jolly Giraffes starts at 30 months and introduces structured daily routines, while Rising 5's groups children by academic year with an emphasis on learning. These overlapping age bands make the point at which a child changes rooms a worthwhile discussion for families.

Learning and Activities

The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning, development and care. In parent language, learning and everyday care belong together: play can develop counting and concentration, while daily routines help children practise independence and looking after themselves.

In August 2023, practitioners extended play by encouraging children to count the toes on toy dinosaurs. Children also persevered with challenging jigsaws rather than immediately abandoning them. Those examples show learning happening within an activity that already interested the child, rather than only during an adult-led group session.

The limitation in August 2023 was how closely teaching matched each child's next learning step. Staff observed children and understood where help was needed, but teaching sometimes lacked that precision. Larger group activities also sometimes lost older children's attention. For parents, the useful distinction is between an appealing activity and one organised so that their own child can take part and learn from it.

Outdoor and Community Life

The outdoor play area includes a greenhouse and a separate border for growing plants and vegetables. Gardening gives children something to investigate over time, making the growing space more than an extra place to play.

In August 2023, outings took children to an airport, along nature trails and to meet residents of a nearby care home. Activities beyond the nursery had specific learning aims. The combination brought encounters with nature and other people into children's experiences, rather than keeping learning entirely within the nursery building.

Care and Support

In August 2023, babies received cuddles and reassurance, while older children were encouraged through praise. Staff shared responsibilities and responded to children's needs as a team. For a family choosing care for a young baby, these examples of responsive interaction matter alongside the age band of Baby Bears.

At the August 2023 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and children, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities, making good progress. Teaching and surroundings were adapted as children developed. These are dated judgements about practice at that visit.

Everyday independence was visible in August 2023: children put things away after eating, cared for toys and recorded their attendance themselves. Older children fed and cleaned pet insects, and daily toothbrushing introduced oral care. These small responsibilities gave children opportunities to contribute and practise self-care during the nursery day.

The staffing snapshot in August 2023 counted 23 childcare staff, of whom 18 held early years qualifications at level 2 or above. That describes the team at the time, rather than staffing in an individual room today. Food is prepared by the nursery's on-site cook, giving meals a place within the setting's daily operation.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

Opening hours are 7.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday. The Full Day booking runs from 7.30am to 6pm; Mornings run from 7.30am to 1pm and Afternoons from 1pm to 6pm, with both shorter sessions offered only to funded children as a top-up. The distinction matters: these are different booking patterns, but the morning and afternoon options are conditional.

Care runs across the year, with closures on bank holidays and for one week at Christmas. Families planning work around nursery attendance therefore need to accommodate those breaks as well as the weekday opening window.

Getting There

The address is 73 School Lane, Hartford, Northwich, CW8 1PF, and the nursery's car park is accessed from Old Vicarage Lane. Enquiries can be made through the Hartford contact form, by telephone on 01606 783 050 or by email to hartford@paintpotsnurseries.co.uk.

Funding and Paid Extras

Funded childcare forms part of the booking offer, with the morning and afternoon top-up restriction shaping how shorter attendance works. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation; families comparing a funded arrangement with a private Full Day booking should assess the quotation against the pattern they intend to use.

Things to Consider

  • Shorter bookings have a condition. Morning and afternoon sessions are offered only to funded children as a top-up. Families wanting a shorter day should establish how that arrangement fits their intended attendance before committing.
  • Room changes need a child-centred discussion. Baby Bears, Tiny Tigers and Busy Bees have overlapping age bands. During a showround, ask how a move between those rooms is agreed and how the child is helped to settle.
  • Teaching and participation deserve attention. In August 2023, teaching sometimes needed a closer match to children's next steps, and larger activities sometimes lost older children's attention. Ask to see how individual learning and group participation are organised now.
  • Understand the funded quotation. The shorter-session offer depends on funded attendance. What does the written quotation cover for the intended pattern, including food, nappies and wipes, and any additional private hours?

The Verdict

Hartford Old School House Day Nursery suits families attracted to a converted school-house setting, gardening space and a progression through named rooms from babies to preschool children. Its attendance offer serves Full Day families and funded families using morning or afternoon top-ups, with the restriction on shorter sessions central to the decision.

The August 2023 Good judgement gives a clear inspection position, while the detailed examples of play, independence and outings add substance. The remaining consideration is how precisely today's teaching addresses individual learning and keeps children involved in group activities. Those questions deserve as much attention as the greenhouse and room names.
