Train-track drawing, potato growing and children preparing their own snacks give Foundry Under Fives a recognisable character: learning through ordinary tasks and purposeful play. At its July 2024 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good overall, with strengths in communication and independence alongside improvements needed in mathematics, group activities and behaviour support.
Based at Harbour View in Hayle, it has 20 places in total. In July 2024, the children attending were aged two to four; the examples below describe nursery life at that time.
In July 2024, play connected early writing with children's interests: drawing tracks accompanied the train set, while a pretend vegetable shop introduced counting. The early years foundation stage is the framework for children's learning, development and care; here, those strands came together through play and practical tasks.
Growing potatoes gave children something to revisit. They watched changes, discussed what plants needed and predicted what would happen next, linking observation with remembering earlier experiences. Stories prompted conversations about fossils and children's beach experiences, extending vocabulary beyond the book itself.
Physical play had concrete challenges. In July 2024, children negotiated steps and tyres, used a swing independently and practised hitting a ball with a tennis racquet. These activities brought balance, coordination and control into the day.
Mathematics needed more breadth, however. Opportunities to explore shape, measurement and numbers were less developed than early literacy. Whole-group activities also engaged children less successfully, especially in the afternoon, reducing the learning they gained from those sessions.
At the July 2024 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and highlighted exceptional SEND support, with staff, families and external agencies working together to help children make excellent progress from their starting points.
Communication support was practical. In July 2024, staff assessed language development, adjusted their speech to each child and used signs alongside visual prompts. Books and activities went home with children, giving families ways to continue learning together.
Independence extended to snack preparation: children poured milk, cut fruit and washed their plates. Emotional support included calming massage and sand timers to help children wait for the swing. However, staff sometimes responded too slowly when behaviour interrupted other children's learning; more consistent help with emotions and their effect on others was needed.
The address is Harbour View, Hayle, Cornwall TR27 4LB. In July 2024, opening hours were 8am to 3.30pm on weekdays during term time, and the nursery received funding for early education for children aged two, three and four.
