In October 2022, staff planned learning around each child's interests and next steps. The Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum worked through play, routines and adult interaction, building communication, physical development, confidence and early knowledge rather than separating the day into school-style lessons.

Language work changed with age. Babies exchanged sounds with adults, toddlers learned farm-animal names through familiar books, and older children discussed favourite and healthy foods. Staff also used tweezers, pegs and knives in messy play and mark-making to strengthen small muscles for later pencil control. Counting, matching quantities to numerals, number songs and mathematical language made early maths a clear strength.

Books led beyond the nursery too. Children's interest in stories prompted a theatre trip, while a charity event culminated in children delivering collected toys to children in hospital. Those experiences connected stories and kindness with something tangible.

Relationships were a strength in October 2022. Staff knew children well, and parents praised the welcome, care, progress updates, learning opportunities, educational webinars and additional support. Younger children practised feeding themselves; older children managed toileting and dressing for outdoor play. Children also tidied toys, shared, took turns and used manners without prompting.

Safeguarding was effective at that inspection. Staff understood welfare concerns and child-protection procedures, monitored attendance and received regular training. Safer recruitment, risk assessment and paediatric first-aid coverage were also in place.

Outdoor time supported both movement and regulation. Children ran, balanced, jumped and climbed, then used yoga and breathing techniques to manage their bodies and feelings.

Leaders used observations and staff knowledge of individual children to choose meaningful next steps. That matters because a toddler repeating a new phrase and an older child matching quantities to numerals need different prompts, even when both are learning through play. Staff sequenced activities so skills built over time rather than standing alone across the nursery day. The result was a coherent progression from early sound-making and self-feeding to conversation, number knowledge and independent self-care.

Children who spoke English as an additional language grew in spoken confidence. The focus remained inclusive: conversations, books, songs and responsive exchanges gave children several routes into language. Parents also valued extra support alongside routine progress information, suggesting that communication was not limited to daily handover. Together, these strands made learning personal, progressive and easy for families to follow.
