The sharpest details come from children’s interactions. Across the age groups, play encouraged children to communicate, exchange ideas and cooperate with one another. These everyday experiences gave language and curiosity a practical setting.

The Early Years Foundation Stage is the statutory early years framework. It supports children’s communication, physical, personal and social development through play and adult-guided experiences. In January 2024, the curriculum was ambitious, with communication and preparation for school at its centre.

Books, stories, mark-making and writing materials were part of the observed provision, while families could borrow books from the lending library. Outdoors, children had regular opportunities to strengthen physical skills, core strength and wellbeing. The garden and forest-school area broadened that physical provision, while discussion about what children could hear and see linked outdoor exploration directly to language and careful observation.

One limit was clear. Practitioners did not always use opportunities to extend children’s knowledge and skills, despite children showing curiosity across the indoor and outdoor environments.

Relationships are a substantial strength. Practitioners knew children well, helped them settle from the start and built close bonds with families. Key-person relationships gave babies and older children familiar adults around them.

Support for emerging needs was structured through the SENCo, who worked closely with parents and other professionals so concerns could be identified and addressed. Children learning English as an additional language were supported with home-language words and phrases, visual cards, books and resources representing different people and cultures.

Ofsted found safeguarding effective in January 2024. Leaders vetted people before they joined the team, then kept practitioners' work under review and helped them improve. Careful recruitment protects children at the outset, while continuing oversight gives practitioners a clear way to strengthen their work after they start. This supports safer, more consistent practice across the team.

Independence was less consistent. Children were developing self-care, but adults did not always create opportunities for them to practise doing things for themselves.

Behaviour was taught in ordinary moments rather than through abstract rules. Everyday routines reinforced age-appropriate expectations, cooperation and consideration for other children. That gives parents a useful picture of social development being woven through the day.

Family Tree Day Nursery is at North Cray Neighbourhood Centre, 1 Davis Way, Sidcup, DA14 5JR. It operates as full day care for babies through to children aged five. The broad age span means families may be considering a long relationship with one setting, from a baby’s first key-person bond through to the language, cooperation and self-care expected before school.

• Independence. Adults did not always let children pour drinks or serve food for themselves. Families who value self-help routines should discuss how these are now handled across the age groups.
• Attendance and costs. Ask for the available session pattern and a written quotation covering funded hours, meals and consumables, so the weekly arrangement is clear before committing.
